Role Description

The School Porter works as part of a team responsible for general porter duties across all school sites, helping to ensure a clean, safe and secure environment for pupils, staff and visitors.

Main Responsibilities: 

  • Acting as meet and greet for visitors and events, this may include out of hours events
  • Portering duties
  • Driving duties for Forest School, Home to School Transport, PE, trips, Co-curricular, PE and any ad hoc requirements
  • Keep yards, paths and drives clear of rubbish, including leaves and snow
  • Maintaining the overall appearance of the school grounds clearing of debris, jet-washing of playgrounds
  • Grit pedestrian areas, entrances and exits in icy conditions
  • Regular property checks and completion of any actions required
  • Moving furniture and setting up for various school functions, organising the required heating for events and ensuring fire regulations are adhered to
  • Carry out weekly fire alarm, fire exit and extinguisher checks
  • Deliver post, parcels and ad hoc items to various departments
  • Management of waste areas and collections including jet-wash wheelie bins at the end of each term
  • Sweep gutters
  • Assist with smaller scale routine repairs and maintenance if required and reporting maintenance issues via the Estates ticketing system
  • Ensure drains are cleared
  • Clear up all spillages
  • Clear blocked toilets and drains
  • Any other duties allocated

General Responsibilities

  • Act as an excellent ambassador for the Foundation at all times.
  • Build and maintain good working relationships with all Foundation colleagues.
  • Assist as necessary in other Foundation areas at peak times.
  • Work at all times towards the aims and goals of the Foundation and any individual objectives and targets you may have agreed.
  • Proactively identify areas for improvements within the Foundation.
  • Actively promote the Foundation’s Equal Opportunities Policy, encouraging staff awareness and participation in all areas.
  • Act in accordance with the Data Protection principles at all times.
  • Adhere at all times to Foundation operational and employment policies and procedures.
  • Take care of your own health and safety and that of people who may be affected by what you do (or do not do).
  • Cooperate with others on health and safety, and not interfere with, or misuse, anything provided for your health, safety or welfare.
  • Follow the training you have received when using any work items the Foundation has provided.
  • Adhere to the Foundation’s Privacy Notice and ensure private and confidential data is kept secure and disposed of in the appropriate manner. 

This job description is not necessarily comprehensive and the position holder will be required to carry out such other duties as may be reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.

Safeguarding and welfare of children

The post holder’s responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young persons for whom s/he is responsible, or with whom s/he comes into contact, will be to adhere to and ensure compliance with the Foundation’s Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy statement at all times. If, in the course of carrying out the duties of the post, the role-holder becomes aware of any actual or potential risks to the safety or welfare of children in the School, s/he must report any concerns to the School’s Designated Person or the Foundation’s Designated Safeguarding Lead.

 All employees of the Foundation adhere to the Safer Working Practices guidance and all teaching staff are required to adhere to the Teaching Standards which can be found on the government website.

Terms and conditions

All appointments for the Stephen Perse Foundation are subject to satisfactory reference and disclosure and barring service (DBS) checks, proof of identity and eligibility to work in the UK, completion of a medical questionnaire and proof of qualifications.

Hours of work

2 posts to cover term time Monday to Friday between the hours of 06:45-17:30. Exact hours to be agreed with the successful candidates.

This role is term time only, working 35 weeks per year, plus 5 INSET days and one additional week every August during the week leading up to the start of the next academic year.

Salary

The salary will be pro-rated based on the exact hours worked. The FTE figure is £29,482.

History of the Stephen Perse Foundation

Formerly the Perse Girls School, founded in 1881, the Foundation developed to become the Stephen Perse Foundation in 2007, and first admitted boys into the Senior School in 2017. The Foundation has grown over recent years, adding a co-educational sixth form to its highly successful Senior School in 2008, and four nurseries and early years settings (three in Cambridge and one at Dame Bradbury’s in Saffron Walden) between 2010 and 2021. The Foundation has been fully co-educational in all settings since 2017 and now comprises four nurseries, two junior schools, a senior school and sixth form.

Predominantly a day school, there are currently 65 (mainly sixth form) boarders. As well as its reputation for academic excellence, The Stephen Perse Foundation is renowned for an innovative approach to education, and a focus on preparing students for the future.
