Job overview

William Hulme’s Grammar School is a highly successful all-through (3-18) school in South Manchester. It is extremely popular and oversubscribed, with an inclusive and diverse community.

The school and its leadership have done an excellent job of joining the state sector while retaining the best traditions developed through the school’s long history. It has expanded significantly over recent years with a new primary school building and a new sixth form centre. With the retirement of the current Principal at the end of this academic year, we are looking for a new leader to take it into its next stage of development.

We believe that William Hulme’s Grammar School can become a truly exceptional school. We want it to be one of the country’s most admired schools – for depth of scholarship, for sporting, musical and extra-curricular success and for preparing young people for extraordinary success in life.

The new Principal will have a vision of that extraordinary school and the ability to achieve it – bringing a track record of excellence in educational practice, in leadership, in motivating and inspiring colleagues and in achieving positive change. For the right person who can see what is possible, this is a career-defining opportunity to write the next chapter in the storied history of one of Manchester’s great schools.

We are part of United Learning, a large, and growing, group of schools aiming to offer a life changing education to children and young people across England.

Our schools work as a team and achieve more by sharing than any single school could. Our subject specialists, our Group-wide intranet, our own curriculum and our online learning portal all help us share knowledge and resource, helping to simplify work processes and manage workloads for an improved work-life balance.

As a Group, we can reward our staff better: with good career opportunities, better pay, benefits, and ultimately, the satisfaction of helping children to succeed. We invest in our staff wellbeing. Our academies each have at least eight INSET days per year (with three of those solely dedicated to planning), and an ongoing group-wide wellbeing programme. It's an ethos we call ‘the best in everyone’.

We are working hard to become a more diverse organisation – which is key to our commitment to bringing out the best in everyone. We welcome applications from everyone committed to this ethos and would particularly welcome applications from black and minority ethnic candidates, who are currently under-represented in the Group as a whole. We always appoint on merit. We are open to discussing flexible working options.

William Hulme’s Grammar School is the second most over-subscribed school in Manchester and one of the most successful comprehensive schools in the country. WHGS is an all-through (3-18) Academy of over 1450 pupils with a wide range of abilities, ethnicities and backgrounds.

The Academy has a relatively new Sixth Form Centre, a two-form entry Primary Phase and has specialist rooms in the Secondary Phase, including fully equipped science labs, a library, ICT resource centre, music practice rooms, design, technology and art rooms.  There is also a sports hall with changing facilities, along with full kitchen and dining facilities in the Primary, Secondary and Sixth Form.

We are committed to ensuring that all children receive a first class education that prepares them thoroughly for the future and allows them to play an active role in the life of the school and wider community. The school encourages staff to organise events and trips (home and abroad), extra-curricular and subject enrichment activities, to develop the whole child, to prepare him/her for the challenges of the modern world.
