Shiplake College

The role at Shiplake College is 19 hours per week and will include time in the evenings, weekends, over public holidays, and possibly some time abroad on camps. The Development Coach role attracts a salary in the region of £12,000 per annum.

This role will ideally be delivered in conjunction with the Leander Internship role.

The role at Shiplake College is an exciting role for an enthusiastic coach who is in the early stages of their coaching career.

Your drive, ability and infectious enthusiasm will help ensure the continued growth and success of rowing at Shiplake College. By being proactive and delivering a positive programme for Years 9 and 10 you will be contributing to the College’s aim of developing a world class rowing reputation.

Working alongside our Director of Rowing, Assistant Head of Rowing and Boathouse Manager you will be part of the boathouse team where alongside rowing you will help with the day-to-day management of our boathouse and multi-activity centre, the Davies Centre, which features a state-of-the-art gym and racks to hold our fleet of 100 rowing boats.

This is a 12-month contract from September 2024.

Leander Club

The role at Leander Club is approximately 20 hours per week, and will include time in the evenings, weekends, over public holidays, and possibly some time abroad on camps. The internship offers a salary of £1000 per month.

Following on from the success of last season’s internships at Leander Club where both post holders[MM1] [DC2]  gained professional employment after completing their coaching season the Leander team wish to employ a new coaching development role.

Purpose of post

The post holder will work alongside and support the Leander coaching team by providing basic coaching, data management, equipment, and boathouse maintenance daily.

This internship is seen as a development role for individuals wishing to start a career in coaching, ideally suited to a recently retired athlete or volunteer coach wishing to turn professional.

Accountability

The post holder will be responsible to the Women’s and Men’s Assistant Coaches[MM3] [DC4] , and through them to both Chief Coaches.

Role responsibilities

·        Provide supervised support to Leander national team triallists and club level athletes

·        Assist the Leander coaching team with running sessions on and off the water

·        Assist in day-to-day equipment and boathouse maintenance

·        Any other related work that contributes to the success of the team

General responsibilities

·        Presenting a positive image of Leander to stakeholders and the wider rowing community

·        Following Leander Club’s and British Rowing’s policies and procedures ensuring these are followed by the post holder and any athletes for whom the post holder is responsible. Particular attention should be given as appropriate to policies on safeguarding, anti-doping, and water safety

·        Participating in continued professional development training relevant to the role

·        This list is not exhaustive, there will be other reasonable duties and requirements associated with the posts, which the chief coaches or assistants may call upon the post holder to perform from time to time.

Anti-doping

The post holder is expected to promote drug-free culture and is expected to be conversant of the World Anti-Doping Code. The post holder is also expected to complete UKAD’s Clean Sport Advisor course.

Professional Requirements

Applicants should have prior experience working alongside athletes. A level 2 coaching qualification is desirable but not essential.

This contract runs from September 2024 and will conclude at Henley Royal Regatta.

Shiplake College is a thriving and relatively young HMC school. It caters for boarding and day pupils aged 11-18. There has been a co-educational Sixth Form since 1998 and in September 2023 girls joined in Year 7 (making up 42% of the cohort) as the College goes fully co-educational. In September 2023 it welcomed a record 521 pupils to the school - an increase from 400 in September 2013.

Overlooking the River Thames, two miles upstream of the famous Henley Royal Regatta stretch, pupils enjoy a beautiful and inspiring 45-acre rural site. The College is conveniently located near major air, railway and motorway networks, close to Reading, London and Oxford and just 40 minutes from Heathrow. Full, weekly and flexi-boarding is available from Year 9, with ad hoc ‘overnight stays’ also an option for day pupils.
