Job overview

We are looking for a dynamic teacher who will lead STEM across the academy. This exciting role is for an innovative and inspiring individual who, in addition to the everyday responsibilities of being an excellent Design and Technology Teacher, has the imagination, leadership and creativity to ensure the success of our STEM groups. These students arrive in Year 7 following an aptitude test and remain together throughout Key Stage 3. The expectation is that the STEM Coordinator manages the challenges, experiences and opportunities for these students and takes a continuous view as they continue their STEM studies through to Year 13. Already highly successful on both the national and international Robotics scene, we are looking for a member of staff to continue this success and, together with other staff, identify new and exciting STEM platforms.

Greig City Academy is unique. It is a diverse, vibrant and supportive community where staff and students thrive on innovation, collaboration and a shared commitment to success. Staff go the extra mile to support students and the outcomes are often extraordinary.

Our successful and oversubscribed Academy is a caring and creative environment in which all students can enjoy learning, develop enquiring minds and gain the skills and knowledge they need for a changing world. We want happy and successful children ready for their future.

This is an exciting time in the school’s journey. Are you ready to join our family, bring your fresh ideas and make an extraordinary impact on the community we serve?

Our team:

Paul Sutton, our inspirational Principal, has built a strong and dedicated team of well-qualified staff who share a common vision to raise students’ achievement.

Staff at the Academy collaborate and support each other by sharing good practice and taking a collegiate approach with a focus on their own contribution to our collective vision. Students and staff work together with enthusiasm and commitment often over and beyond the school day. As part of the Design and Technology Faculty you will be supported by enthusiastic, experienced colleagues with the skills and commitment to support you in your role as STEM Coordinator.

The job:

You will deliver outstanding lessons across Key Stages 3-5 and be instrumental in inspiring and motivating our students. You will be able to demonstrate that you have a broad experience of working within a successful and innovative Design and Technology Faculty. We value industry experience and welcome applications from experienced teachers.

The job clearly covers two key components: you will deliver inspirational lessons across Key Stages 3 to 5, securing great results for students; and you will build on the Academy’s proven success with Robotics and in other areas to develop a new and exciting programme of STEM throughout the Academy in collaboration with your colleagues from maths and science.

Your duties will include:

  • develop the overarching strategy for STEM within the Academy
  • provide updates on STEM to the Principal, Chair of Governors and Head of Faculty (Design and Technology)
  • liaise with the Science, Computing and Maths faculties and organise cross-curricular projects and STEM learning across the Academy
  • lead in the organisation and supervision of STEM trips, visits and in-house events
  • lead participation in a number of STEM related projects and competitions at all events from local to international level
  • organise and maintain outreach programmes to local primary schools and partner schools
  • encourage the uptake of girls in STEM options and careers

What you need:

The successful candidate will:

  • be an excellent practitioner inside and outside the classroom
  • have excellent behaviour management skills and have high expectations of all students
  • demonstrate outstanding teaching, and support consistently strong and effective teaching throughout the Academy
  • work with our diverse school community to identify and develop best existing practice and work in the same way with fresh ideas
  • lead by example and model exemplary practice
  • have excellent communication skills when interacting with students, staff and the wider school community; these will enable you to effectively network with other agencies and individuals to promote STEM
  • support equity, celebrating our diverse school community and helping to champion inclusivity and diversity
  • be able to demonstrate that you are a leader that can call upon personal qualities appropriate at this level, such as tact, diplomacy, empathy and excellent listening skills
  • have considerable energy, resilience, and a well-developed sense of humour!

What we offer:

The successful candidate will be joining a tight-knit community; staff turnover is consistently low and the wellbeing of our staff is important to us. We aim to support staff to achieve a sensible work-life balance.

The personal development of all our staff is highly valued at GCA and we offer the opportunity to apply for our Learning Award of up to £2,400 per year for your continued professional development or other skills and talents. This is in addition to the school’s ongoing CPD programme. Staff can opt into incentives including our Cycle to Work scheme and an interest-free annual season ticket loan.

We have an array of wellbeing initiatives such as a weekly yoga session, Staff Art Club, regular visits from a qualified massage therapist and social events throughout the year, to name but a few.
