Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced teacher of Religious Education who is looking to move into subject leadership, or an existing subject leader who is looking for a new challenge in a different school.

We are launching RE GCSE with our Year 9 students for the first time in September2024. This is a unique opportunity to shape and develop a new curriculum which we believe will be both successful and met with enthusiasm by our bright students who are keen to learn.

We currently teach RE at Key Stage 3 and have a bespoke unexamined Politics and Philosophy curriculum in Key Stage 4. It is our ambition to develop examined GCSE RE for our Key Stage 4 students to recognise and reward their endeavours within this specialism. This initiative has been welcomed by students and the current departmental staff.

We would expect our students to be as successful in RE GCSE as they are in other humanities subjects. The typical attainment for Humanities subjects is >55% Level 7 to 9 and we would expect similar levels of achievement in RE at GCSE. This an incredible opportunity to develop and drive forward a new GCSE subject in a highly successful school with eager and bright students. We have subject specialists who are passionate about Religious Education and promoting the wider understanding of our students, who themselves bring a depth of knowledge and understanding from their own diverse backgrounds.

The successful candidate will

- Be a qualified teacher (Honours degree with QTS) looking to move into subject leadership, or an existing leader of Religious Education who is looking for a new challenge

- Be passionate about their subject and a desire to provide an engaging and rich curriculum for our students.

- Take a lead on the delivery of RE at Key Stage 3 and the development and delivery of RE at Key Stage 4

- Be an outstanding classroom practitioner who is creative, can take initiative and is able to lead by example.

- Have excellent subject knowledge and a deep understanding of the RE curricular, to be able to develop high quality teaching, learning and assessment materials to support students in achieving their high aspirations and their individual potential for success.

- To build relationships with students and staff to achieve the desired outcomes within the supportive environment at GGS.

- Have the ability to develop and support existing staff for whom delivering examined RE will be a new yet welcome experience.

- Have the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with other leaders

- Be a committed team member who will contribute to wider school activities

We offer:

  • Enthusiastic and highly able students who “attain very high standards and make excellent progress” (OfSTED).
  • Supportive and enthusiastic colleagues, and a positive working environment
  • A strong relationship with the local community with fast links to London and Europe; free
  • on-site parking
  • Intelligent and articulate students that are ready to learn
  • Benenden Healthcare Scheme
  • Potential for on-site accommodation
  • Generous leadership non-contact allowance

Values and vision

Uniquely, Gravesend Grammar School has reduced the number of teachers at Key Stage 3, by using specialist teachers who are highly skilled in delivering a range of subjects. This additional time spent with students helps create deep and lasting relationships and ensures teachers are very aware of individual student progress and pastoral needs.

The boys' school offers a wealth of opportunities for students to participate in concerts and productions. It recently adopted an Arts Award for all of its lower school students.

In sport, the secondary school is linked with many clubs including Gravesend Rugby Club, Old Gravesendians’ Rugby Club, Gravesham Hockey Club, Northfleet Badminton Club, Iroquois Basketball Club, Gravesham Tennis Club, and Gravesend and Meopham Cricket Clubs. These links allow the school to enhance its provision externally by using specialist facilities and coaching.

Ofsted report

“Teachers have the highest expectations for all of the students. Staff benefit from an excellent training programme that makes sure all are up to date and always developing their expertise. All of the students attain very high standards and make excellent progress as a result of the quality of the teaching they receive and as a result of their own ambition and positive attitudes to learning. The sixth form provides an excellent preparation for students’ next steps in life whether at university or in training and employment.”
