Job overview

We are looking for a Swimming Instructor to join the newly established Dean Close Swim School & Club. As a Swimming Instructor your primary role is teaching/coaching people of all ages and abilities to develop swimming skills, technique, and confidence in the water.

Duties

Whilst your job description will expect you to perform any other duty the Company may require you to perform, you will also be required to:

  • Deliver quality lessons in a safe and nurturing environment.
  • It is imperative you maintain a safe working environment by ensuring activities are safe and relevant, by keeping a tidy workstation, ensuring ground rules and pool rules are adhered to and always supervising your group and never turn your back to your class: it is completely acceptable to sit children not being helped by you on the side whilst they wait their turn to maintain high safety standards.
  • To constantly update, manage and complete your registers, checking them for any changes or amendments to your groups prior to the start of your shift.
  • Liaise with the swimming coordinator about your groups, keeping them informed of any potential issue or change that may need to happen to keep the group functioning at optimal efficiency.
  • Wear correct uniform, which is currently a Dean Close Top and any navy/dark shorts of your choice. Footwear is optional. Jewellery must be removed, nails kept short, and hair tied up. If in doubt, ask the coordinator.
  • Comply with ‘Awarding’ procedure so that participants can receive any award they earn for progress made.
  • In addition to teaching swimming, working in a sporting environment will require you to assist with opening and closing of the facility, including: unlocking/locking doors, turning on/off the lights, operating the pool cover, putting in and taking out poolside steps, checking changing rooms for rubbish and lost property and flushing toilets to ensure facility is clean and tidy before customers arrive and after all customers have left, ensuring adequate seating is available, checking fire doors are closed and completing the pool use log book.
  • In cases of injury to any child whilst under your care, you must immediately complete an accident report form.
  • You must promptly reply to company communications in whichever format they are received (such as email, text message, messaging app, and so on).
  • You must embrace the Dean Close Swim School team spirit by working closely with your colleagues and demonstrating the ethos and values of the Dean Close Foundation.

Person Specification

  • STA Level 2 Award or Swim England SEQ Level 2 Teaching Aquatics
  • Be loyal, honest, trustworthy and reliable
  • Enthusiastic, highly motivated and well-organised
  • Confident, proactive with a helpful and flexible approach
  • Able to demonstrate initiative and creativity
  • Ability to work well in a team and alone, with minimum supervision, maintaining a professional and enthusiastic approach
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all colleagues
  • Strong desire to improve knowledge

Please see the attached job description for further details.

The Foundation

Dean Close Foundation is a growing, vibrant and diverse family of independent schools and nurseries, uniting around a shared vision and set of values. These spring from the origins of Dean Close School, which was founded in 1886 in memory of Dean Francis Close, Rector of Cheltenham and educational philanthropist. The Christian ethos of that original school continues today where the aim is that every child should be given the opportunities to flourish, underpinned by its core values of courage, contribution and love which are the guiding principles behind its educational vision. The Foundation currently has five schools and six nurseries within its group, creating a strong community that can share best practice, resources and a secure future.

Dean Close Foundation is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. Applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Dean Close School is a co-educational day and boarding school which provides continuity of education from age 2+ to 18. The School was established in 1886, and is set in 50 acres of parkland in the centre of Cheltenham.
Dean Close is renowned for focusing on individual development, helping to nurture each person's strengths and talents. The small classes and excellent learning facilities ensure good, above average academic results. A strong tradition of music, art, sport and drama and a wide spectrum of extra curricular activities make it possible for every child to achieve success and confidence.
The School also offers academic, sports, music, drama, art and all-rounder scholarships.

Ethos

In his speech at this year's Commemoration, the Headmaster stated that:

".... I do not believe that examination results are fundamentally what Dean Close is about or what makes us an outstanding school. It is the formation of character and the acquisition of a value system that will enable young people to live life to the full. These values centre on service to the community and on character traits such as integrity, fortitude, courage, endeavour, loyalty, willingness to take appropriate risks, kindness and love. If schools do not attempt to lay down the bedrock of a value system for young people, society has no hope for the future."

Making a difference is central to the Dean Close ethos. Carpe Diem is more than just a motto. We do not believe that happiness and well-being can simply be taught through timetabled lessons, the unique value of each individual needs to be modelled, lived and enshrined in the School's value system. Dean Close is a Christian school and community. The Christian faith is seen as life-enhancing and dynamic and therefore a positive force in the School even to the many who do not share this faith.

The School's Christian foundation and tradition is very evident in everyday life through the mutual respect and openness of relationships between pupils and between staff and pupils as well as through the emphasis on spiritual as well as academic and personal development. Visitors to Dean Close regularly comment on the friendly welcome they receive, the confidence and maturity of the pupils they meet and the warmth of the community. Dean Close is a place where every individual's talents are seen as important and where every day is seen as an opportunity to do something exciting.

Community, love and relationship lie at the heart of the School.
