TEACHER OF GEOGRAPHY

TMS or UPS – Suitable for Early Careers Teachers (ECTs)

Required September 2024

Aylesford School Warwick is a forward thinking and exciting educational environment. We pride ourselves on our commitment to our students and our community.

We are looking for an enthusiastic Teacher of Geography who is keen to support and enable students up to KS5. The right candidate will join a well-resourced Geography department in a school that is committed to staff induction, support and investment. The post would suit a candidate new to the profession or an experienced Teacher looking to return to the profession.

Welcome to the Geography Department

We are looking for an enthusiastic and inspiring geographer for a friendly, collaborative department which utilises current issues and academic theories to strive for a dynamic curriculum and learning experience. We require a geography teacher who is dedicated to motivating students and driven to ensure all pupils reach their potential, through a sound knowledge of adaptive teaching. You will need to be comfortable with supporting and providing a space for pupils to break down single stories and misconceptions. It will be required that you can work within a team and help support the promotion of a positive behaviour policy within your classroom.

KS3 Geography is taught across years 7, 8 and 9. Years 7 and 9 have 4 lessons a fortnight, whilst year 8 have 5 lessons a fortnight. This allows ample time to explore a wide variety of Geographical topics with our students, as well as equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge to become informed Global citizens.

GCSE Geography is taught in years 10 and 11 and is a popular subject amongst students. Students follow the Edexcel B specification which builds on their knowledge from KS3 and is split into three components: Global Geographical issues, UK Geographical issues and People and the environment issues. The course involves two days of fieldwork, one river study and one urban study, both of which are always thoroughly enjoyed by staff and students. Years 10 and 11 students receive 5 hours of Geography a fortnight.

A-level uptake is growing steadily with students following the Edexcel specification. The course investigates Globalisation, Superpowers, Health and Human Rights, Diverse Places, Tectonic Processes and Hazards, Coastal Landscapes and Change, The Water Cycle and Water Insecurity and The Carbon Cycle and Energy Security. As part of the course students partake in a one-day urban fieldwork, and a three-day residential coastal fieldwork.

In addition to compulsory field trips, we are keen for our students to explore the world and to enhance their learning with real life examples. Previously planned trips have included both Italy and Iceland for our GCSE and A-level students.

Geography is a constantly evolving subject, and as such, our department is continuously looking for fresh ideas to inspire and encourage students in their studies. Staff in the department work together to ensure the ongoing development of our curriculum.

The School’s origins go back to the late nineteenth century. It was moved from Leamington Spa to its present site in 1964 as a response to overcrowding and the need for modernising. It opened as a School for 400, mainly Warwick students. In time it became a six-form entry Comprehensive School, attracting students from a wider area. A large prestigious housing development near the School has increased numbers on roll from approximately 850 to 1,200+. We became an academy on 1st January 2012 as a result of our desire to become more independent and free to control our own destiny. The school, its staff and governors have been supportive and positive in moving to this new status.

From September 2015 we have incorporated a new Primary School Phase into our facilities and now operate as a 4-19 Academy. This is an exciting development as from September 2021 we are now operating as an all-through school with Reception children through to Sixth Form Students.

Vision and values

Aylesford School aims to develop a love of learning in pupils and to continuously develop the teaching and learning experience. Teachers endeavour to consistently raise expectations and aspirations.

The school maintains a strong focus on raising attainment and achievement and strives to develop standards through challenge. Strong emphasis is placed on pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.

Ofsted report

Aylesford School was last inspected by OFSTED in April 2018 and received a very good report that was published in early May 2018. It highlighted the good quality of teaching based on the fact that, 'Teachers manage their classes well. They have high expectations of pupils' conduct and behaviour. Classrooms are calm, orderly environments and pupils are on task'. The report notes that, 'Pupils are very proud of their work and their achievements' and the school has a 'relentless focus on improving teaching and outcomes for pupils.’ The full report is available to read on both the school and OFSTED websites.

To improve still further the report recommends that we should:-

  • develop a greater strategic oversight as an all- through school, sharing the good practice taking place between phases
  • improve the quality of teaching, learning and assessment by making sure that all teachers continue to support disadvantaged pupils.

Leaders and Governors of the school agree with these comments and they will remain in our aims, aspirations and ambitions for the coming years.
