Job overview
Not every young person thrives in a mainstream classroom. At Outwood Alternative Provision Eston, we work with students who need something different: a smaller setting, stronger relationships, and adults who genuinely believe in their potential.
We're looking for an Advanced Teaching Assistant who can provide the consistency, encouragement and specialist support that helps young people re-engage with education. This is a role for someone who is patient, resilient and emotionally intelligent, and who understands that progress is often measured in small but significant steps.
Working alongside teachers and pastoral staff, you'll deliver targeted interventions, support learning in and beyond the classroom, and help students overcome barriers linked to SEND, social, emotional and mental health needs.
Every day is different, and while the role can be demanding, the opportunity to make a lasting difference to a young person's future is immense.
Our students need adults who can build trust, remain calm under pressure, and maintain high expectations - even when circumstances are challenging. In return, you'll join a highly supportive team that is committed to helping every student succeed.
Working pattern: 30 hours per week, Monday to Friday, term time plus 5 days.
This position is temporary for the 2026/27 academic year.
If you're ready for a role that's challenging, rewarding and genuinely impactful, please join us.
Welcome from the Principal
Thank you for taking an interest in this teaching post at Outwood Alternative Provision Eston.
Outwood Alternative Provision Eston is an innovative alternative provision centre, principally for students from Outwood Academies in the Tees Valley who need additional behavioural, social, emotional or mental health support. In line with our absolute commitment to inclusion in its widest sense, this is an alternative provision for vulnerable students who display challenging behaviours and are often at risk of high levels of fixed-period exclusions or permanent exclusion.
Operating much smaller classes than our mainstream academies, this KS3/4 alternative provision focuses on personal development and the health and well being of students, whilst not losing academic rigour. We will focus on ensuring that all students can achieve well and are able to move to their next stage with confidence, be it education, employment or training.
We are an inclusive, and caring centre judged ‘good’ by Ofsted. At heart, we aim to ensure we best meet the needs of our students. Our centre supports the most vulnerable students including those who have SEND and are disadvantaged. Many of our students experience significant barriers to learning and some have adverse childhood experiences.
Responsibilities
You will deliver planned learning activities and intervention programmes to small groups or individuals in various environments, adjusting delivery based on student responses. A crucial element is involvement in assessing, monitoring, and recording student development and attainment via appropriate ICT systems, especially tracking the impact of interventions.
The role requires supporting students with special educational needs (SEN) and those for whom English is not their first language. Duties also include providing short-term cover for learning environments, supporting the implementation of individual development plans (like EHCPs), managing resources, and invigilating exams.

Qualifications
Candidates must hold a Level 3 qualification relating to working with children and young people. Essential experience includes working flexibly to meet business needs, working in a school setting or with children/young people, and previous experience supporting students in small group or one-to-one situations.
You must be skilled in delivering interventions and highly proficient in a range of educational ICT packages, such as SIMS, o'Cloud, and Praising Stars. Effective communication, confidentiality, and the ability to relate empathetically to students and recognise potential safeguarding concerns are also necessary.
