Job overview

We are looking for a Behaviour Support Officer to join us at our Aspire provision at Harris Professional Skills Sixth Form.

This is a new and exciting opportunity for a dynamic and highly motivated individual to join our pastoral team to further strengthen the support that we provide to all students. You will have a passion for making a difference in the lives of young people, will be sensitive and resilient and will be on the front line in supporting our young people to exceed their potential and become students with character, courage and conscience who are academically and personally successful.

About Us

Harris Aspire Academy will provide an outstanding ‘all round' education to all of its students. Since opening its doors in 2013, Harris Aspire Academy has been committed in its vision to provide an outstanding education to all of its students overcoming barriers that may have prevented them from engaging fully in mainstream education. The Academy is part of the Harris Federation whose name is synonymous with setting standards of excellence and fulfilling high expectations.

Main Areas of Responsibility

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the consistent implementation of the Behaviour for Learning policy
  • Working as part of the behaviour team to ensure students are monitored and supervised before school, during break and throughout lunch
  • Liaising between the academy and the local community (including the Police) for any aspect of behaviour issues during the academy day
  • Ensuring that students enter the building in full academy uniform
  • Mentoring students on PSPs
  • Providing the students with very clear expectations of conduct
  • Ensuring that follow up action is taken for students failing to meet academy code of conduct while internally excluded
  • Keeping records of poor punctuality
  • Organising “corridor sweeps”
  • Overseeing the entrance of students into the building after 8:25 am
  • Overseeing the registration of students who are late to the academy
  • Communicating with Behaviour for Learning Admin, Main Office, SENCO, administration and teaching staff
  • Organisation of meetings and communication with parents/carers

Qualifications & Experience

We would like to hear from you if you have:

  • GCSE Maths and English at grade C or above, or equivalent
  • Knowledge of the academy behaviour for learning policy
  • Knowledge of the range of barriers to learning that students face
  • Training in child protection and safeguarding procedures
  • Basic knowledge of first aid; e.g. emergency first aid course
  • Degree or equivalent
  • Three years' experience of working in an inner city school or educational establishment
  • Experience of dealing successfully with a range of behaviour issues
  • Experience of working with staff to ensure excellent behaviour for learning
  • Experience of working with families
  • Experience of supervising a group of students for detentions, referral and internal exclusion as appropriate
  • Experience of working with challenging students and finding ways in which we can meet their needs more successfully

Harris Professional Skills Sixth Form is opening in September 2018 and will provide an outstanding vocational education and preparation for skills based work or transition to university for students in Croydon and those from surrounding boroughs. This new academy with up to date, state of the art facilities, will recruit students from across Croydon and the wider London area focusing on the hard skills that will be needed in an area undergoing considerable reconstruction and rejuvenation. By focusing from the outset on the goal of employability within a number of sectors, we have created a curriculum that challenges and inspires, creating well rounded students who have the drive and ambition to succeed in their chosen area of work with additional skill sets that put them above others competing for jobs in their chosen vocation.
