Curriculum Leader of Mathematics

TLR 1B

We are looking for an inspirational practitioner to lead our outstanding and thriving maths department. You will have the opportunity to enhance our vision of ‘opportunity and achievement for all’ as the leader of a department with a strong track record of results. Our maths GCSE results last year put us in the top 10% of schools across the country.

The successful candidate will possess the ability to inspire and enhance our students’ understanding and enjoyment of the subject. We have multiple groups at Key Stage 5 for A-Level maths, Further maths and Core maths, and have recently added GCSE Statistics to our offer at Key Stage 4. This is a chance to lead, develop and enhance the maths curriculum to inspire students and improve our already significantly positive outcomes.

We pride ourselves on offering our students more than just classroom based learning; over the past few years, we have performed strongly in both the UKMT individual and team events, students have qualified for BMO training camps and the national team finals respectively. We are proud to have hosted the maths feast competition and we have strong links with the Further Mathematics Support Programme at Key Stage 5.

If you are an inspiring, energetic and enthusiastic leader who can help us to create a nurturing environment within which all students can reach their full potential; are a passionate teacher who would like to develop your leadership skills and pedagogy in a supportive and successful school and want to work in a school that OFSTED recognised to have outstanding behaviour from our students, this is the job for you.

The successful candidate will lead the Maths Department and this position offers an excellent opportunity to play a pivotal role in our high achieving school. If you are passionate about your subject and want to really make a difference to the lives of young people then Horsforth School could be the school for you. Our school is dedicated to evidence-based practice with a focus on Rosenshine’s principles of instruction. We have a strong emphasis on incorporating educational research in to the classroom. The successful candidate will be a dynamic and enthusiastic teacher where you will have the opportunity of working in a supportive and experienced maths department with a strong team ethos. We believe in working collaboratively, sharing ideas and supporting each other to achieve great things as we develop innovative teaching and learning strategies.

The department has a strong track record for results having 87% of students at GCSE achieving Grades 4 to 9 last academic year. The overall progress figure being +0.73 which is significantly above the national and regional average. In other words, there’s never been a better time to join us. Results at post-16 are also consistently high with 49% of students attaining A*- A Grades at A Level. We have a strong offer at KS4, running GCSE Statistics alongside as an option subject, and at A Level we have high uptake, with three A level groups, a Core Maths cohort and a Further Maths group. Therefore, some experience of teaching at KS5 would be beneficial although not essential. A real interest in developing teaching and learning is also important.

GCSE and A Level results are consistently well above the national averages and in 2022 and 2023 the school had the best A Level results in the whole of Leeds. Horsforth School was also named one of the top schools in Yorkshire in The Sunday Times Parent Power Guide in 2022.

For our 1500 and growing students, Horsforth School provides an engaging environment of discovery and growth. For our colleagues too, this setting offers some great benefits. Located in north-west Leeds, the school is just five miles from the city centre with its thriving retail, leisure and cultural facilities, yet on the edge of open countryside. York, Harrogate and the Dales are within easy reach.
