Job overview

Our Opportunity

A springboard to Senior Leadership

We are looking for an experienced Science leader; either having led a Science team already or been a 2nd in department in a large school, who is on the fast-track journey to Senior Leadership, but wants to expand their portfolio of expertise.

This role combines that of Head of Science, with that of Head of Sixth Form. You may be thinking, wow, that's alot! However, Scarborough UTC serves only 250 pupils in total (30 in the sixth form), small is beautiful here. The Science team comprises 4 staff: The Head of Department, 2 science teachers and 1 technician. The systems and structures are fully in place and the subject is successful. The Sixth is highly successful, with a small tight curriculum offer and historically every student moving on to Higher Education or Higher Apprenticeships. This role gives the potential candidate a chance to learn new skills in managing a Sixth form and would place them in good stead for a move into Assistant Principal or Vice Principal roles in the near future.

We have an open college - so if you are interested in this exciting role please arrange to visit us and chat to find out more. We would strongly recommend viewing the Ofsted report from November 2022 as this really sums up the strengths of this fantastic provision.

Role & Responsibility:

· To plan, organise and deliver an appropriate learning programme which exploits the integrated curriculum inherent to the UTC educational vision and which guides and encourages students to develop and fulfil their potential at Key Stage 3,4 and 5.

· Support, lead, motivate and liaise with the Science and sixth form staff, including teachers, to ensure that provision is effective, and adjustments are made as necessary to help them meet their personal and professional targets.

· Assist with planning timetables for students and ensure staff are deployed effectively and proportionately across the science department and sixth form.

Scarborough UTC

“A school of opportunity”; “Leaders and staff describe the school as a family. They feel mutually supported and value the attention leaders give them. Staff morale is extremely high.” “Behaviour is calm and respectful. In lessons, pupils are attentive and want to learn.” Ofsted 2022 To read the full report please visit - Scarborough UTC - Ofsted (coastandvale.academy)

About the Area

Set on the beautiful North Yorkshire Coast with stunning scenery and glorious beaches, Scarborough is a destination that has attracted visitors from near and far for over 400 years.

Scarborough is overlooked by a hilltop medieval castle dated from the 1150’s, and became well known as a spa town and Britain’s first seaside resort in the 17th Century. During the 1800’s it was home to the author Anne Bronte and saw the construction of The Crown and the Grand Hotel.

Despite its rich history, Scarborough doesn’t live in the past and is the ideal place to live and study today. The town is constantly innovating and was judged to be the ‘most creative and inspiring entrepreneurship initiative in Europe’ at the European Enterprise Awards (2009).

Alongside the launch of Scarborough UTC  and many other start-up businesses, 2016 saw the opening of Alpamare’s new £15 million waterpark as part of the continuing redevelopment of North Bay.

As the largest town on the Yorkshire coast, Scarborough acts as a cultural hub for the area.

There’s a lively local music scene and the Open Air Theatre attracts musicians from across the Globe. Outstanding drama is housed at the renowned Stephen Joseph Theatre – noted for hosting world premieres of Alan Ayckbourn’s award-winning plays.

Food and drink wise, the town is packed with independent restaurants, brewpubs, bars and delis.  Whether you like real ale, cream teas or cocktails, the range of great eateries satisfy everybody’s taste, including quirky coffee houses ‘Yay Coffee’ and the 2013 UK’s Best Café ‘Eat Me’.

The biggest names in comedy such as Noel Fielding, Bill Bailey and Jimmy Carr can be seen at the Spa Complex, and the 3-day arts and music event ‘Coastival’ is a highlight in Scarborough each February.

For those in need of retail therapy, they will find everything from high street favourites to independent retailers, who are the real hidden gems of the town centre.
