Contract type:

Full Time

The role is to work in support of the school drama teacher. A main focus for the role is to teach small group drama classes preparing the children for poetry performances and for ESB examinations. In 2017 one of our ESB Year 6 candidates was awarded the ESB student of the year award, and typically our pupils achieve very highly in these examinations, so the skills learned for these examinations are an important element to this role.

In addition, the post holder will support the drama teacher preparing for school plays and work in our ILE (individualised learning enhancement) team providing additional help for individuals and groups of children across our full range of classes.

Broomfield has a vibrant tradition of drama teaching leading to inventive and exciting workshops and performances throughout the academic year. A small flavour of this is explained on our website at http://www.broomfieldhouse.com/Music-Drama-and-Art

Numerous well-known actors have sent their children to Broomfield over the decades and most recently ex-Broomfield pupil Will Poulter has been successful in many leading films. Our school has been owned and managed by Headteachers for many decades with an arts background, so the commitment to the arts at the school is on-going and strong.

With the current post holder moving to a new role after 10 happy years, we are now seeking someone with fresh energy and ideas to work as part of our team. Drama is a prominent part of life and learning at Broomfield and connects creatively with our music, art, English, modern languages and dance teaching. We seek someone who relishes the prospect of building on these links.

We seek a drama assistant teacher with high ambition for the achievement in the subject for all our children, and who is able to collaborate with colleagues across the arts disciplines.

It would be helpful if our drama assistant teacher understands how best to collaborate with class teachers within an independent preparatory school such as ours. Also important is an ability to manage relationships with parents very well regarding drama work and other issues to do with performances, examinations and workshops. Together with an enthusiasm for contributing as a team to the life of the school through supporting the drama teacher in staging school plays and developing how drama enhances the overall life of the school.

The main duties in this role are:

¨ Assisting the drama teacher for all years (early years to Year 6)

¨ Assisting the drama teacher for all years in producing and directing plays for all years

¨ Work as our main speech and drama tutor towards English Speaking Board examinations, in break times and after school (with breaks during the day so that the teaching day is manageable)

¨ Work alongside our drama, music and art teachers to create the music and staging for all plays in the school

¨ Supporting our music teacher in class singing activities as necessary

¨ Lunch and playground duties

¨ Half-termly meetings with our co-ordinator for Sports Arts ICT and Languages

¨ Informal meetings with parents

¨ Keeping appropriate records of pupils’ attendance and academic progress

¨ Writing timely and appropriate reports on children’s progress and achievement in the Summer term

¨ Attendance at report evenings as required by the Headteacher

¨ Attendance at staff meetings as reasonably called by the Headteacher

¨ Attendance at official staff development and training events as arranged by the Headteacher

¨ Attendance and participation in official school events

¨ Attendance at Parents Teacher Association meetings and events

¨ Assisting in the maintenance of the classroom environment to provide effective education in the school.

¨ Working with other school staff to define and achieve educational and other goals for the pupils and the school

¨ Working with the other staff and Headteacher to ensure Broomfield maintains our strong commitment to the protection, welfare and safety of our children.

Broomfield House School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, and expects all staff to share this commitment. Appointment is subject to an enhanced DBS check.
