Required for September 2024. We are looking for a highly motivated, well qualified and enthusiastic Head of Department to join a very successful English Department. The department’s curriculum and delivery of education are rated ‘Outstanding’ and ‘exceptional’ by Ofsted in 2024. The successful candidate will be able to teach GCSE and ‘A’ Level to a high level.
The Department offers English Literature at A Level.
We aim to consolidate recent achievements and move with the School as it develops, while improving the facilities we provide for the students and staff. Recent developments include substantial work on the curriculum, teaching and enrichment opportunities. The candidate will be willing to participate in and support these.

Handsworth Grammar School (HGS) is voluntary aided, selective grammar school in Handsworth, Birmingham. The school admits boys from the age of 11-18 and, since 1997, girls into its sixth form. Founded in 1862, it the oldest surviving selective school in Birmingham.
Lessons focus on both learning habits as well as learning the content of courses and topics. The ten learning habits Handsworth Grammar School aims to build include collaborating, questioning, listening, planning and distillation.
A new £1.6 million sixth form centre, offering students their own bespoke area, is linked to the Lodge, where there is a one-stop shop for careers advice and guidance and examinations advice and guidance.
