Role Description
We are seeking to appoint an exceptional and highly motivated Head of Department for Beacon Communication School (BCS) an Additionally Resourced Provision (ARP). The successful candidate who will lead our specialist autism provision at The Forest Academy will work alongside the SENCO in the strategic development of BCS. The provision is suited for students who needs cannot be met solely within mainstream schools but for whom a special school placement would limit their potential.
Since September 2022 the Beacon Communication School has been at full capacity with 5 cohorts across year 7 to 11. The BCS provision is structured to develop independence, prepare for adulthood and access enough level 2 courses at KS4 with a view to progress to level 3 courses at KS5.
The successful candidate will:
- Take responsibly for the day-to-day operations of BCS
- Plan, implement and deliver high quality teaching across BCS and mainstream
- Lead on curriculum development and implementation
- Lead on development of department resources
- Lead on communication with parents
- Line-manage support staff
- Support transition of students in BCS at key transition points
- Analyse data to set ambitious targets for students in terms of future attainment, mainstream lesson access and qualifications achieved
- Collaborate across the Trust to share good practice and support improvements to the BCS provision
- Improve the quality of teaching, learning and assessment in BCS
- Deliver training and support for mainstream teaching staff to support further improvements in the mainstream provision for BCS students
Candidates will have had experience of working successfully with students who have social communication needs in a specialist setting or an additional resource provision. Applications from candidates who have a high level of expertise and have been successful working with ASD students in a mainstream setting are also welcomed.
