Job overview

We are seeking to appoint a well-qualified, experienced, and dynamic Head of EAL / English as an Additional Language. The Head of EAL will devise and coordinate the program of EAL lessons for students within the school and liaise with and supervise other staff within the department.

Main Responsibilities:

Instructional Leadership

  • Monitor and evaluates instructional practices and student outcomes.
  • Supervise Curriculum Development and Implementation
  • Champion the adoption of innovative and evidence-based teaching practices throughout the school.
  • Encourage experimentation with new methodologies, technology integration, and pedagogical advancements, fostering an environment that values creativity and continuous improvement in education.
  • Promote professional development improving instructional strategies.
  • Be a subject expert who regularly updates knowledge to stay current in the subject.

Leading Teaching and Learning

  • Promote a culture and environment of high-quality teaching and learning.
  • Teach General English, Cambridge exams (KET, PET, FCE), IGCSE ESL and IELTS to students.
  • Teach EAL within the school, both individually and in small groups.
  • Create a dynamic teaching environment in which students can thrive, take risks and explore their potential.

Lesson Planning

  • Plan lessons clearly according to the needs of the student/s and the expectations of the school/outside agency.

Management

  • Manage the EAL teachers in the department.
  • Liaise with Heads of Department and subject teachers regarding students’ English Language needs.
  • Create the EAL timetable which fits into the whole school timetable.

Assessment

  • Assess the English level of all current applicable students.
  • Ensure all documentation and paperwork is correct and up-to-date.
  • Mark work regularly and promptly, in line with departmental and school marking policies.
  • Keep clear and full records of pupils’ progress.
  • Write individual reports in line with departmental and school reporting procedures and policies.

Safeguarding

  • Apply the necessary health and safety procedures when appropriate.
  • Take responsibility for safeguarding the pupils.

Qualifications, experience and skills required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in addition to DELTA (Diploma) is required. Or
  • Bachelor’s degree in addition to Master’s in Education (TESOL). Or
  • CELTA or Trinity TESOL plus 4 years’ experience accepted).
  • Demonstrate sound knowledge and teaching experience of the Cambridge ESOL examinations is highly preferred.
  • A minimum of 4-8 years of proven experience.
  • Native Level English proficiency required.
  • Demonstrate a flexible and adaptable approach to the requirements of the subject and its cross-curricular nature within a secondary school environment.
  • Experience of working with international students in a secondary school environment.
  • Demonstrate an inspiring approach to teaching EAL.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team.
  • Ability to recognise and suggest enhancements to existing responsibilities.
  • Apply Emotional Intelligence.
