We are seeking a Head of English to lead our English department at our independent prep school in the Cotswolds. The successful candidate will be responsible for the academic and pastoral development of all English students across the prep school, and be a key member of the college's middle leadership team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leading, managing and developing the English department, including setting and monitoring academic standards
  • Planning and delivering a curriculum that is stimulating, challenging and accessible to all students
  • Providing guidance and support to teachers in the department to ensure the highest standards of teaching and learning
  • Monitoring and evaluating student progress, and providing relevant feedback to parents and carers
  • Encouraging a love of reading and writing in all students through extra-curricular activities and events
  • Representing the department at school and external events
  • Collaborating with other departments and senior leaders to ensure a cohesive and effective curriculum across the school
  • Managing the department budget and resources effectively
  • Being a positive role model and promoting a culture of excellence within the department and school

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A teaching qualification and experience teaching English to prep school or primary pupils
  • Good people management skills
  • Proven experience in curriculum development and delivery
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • A deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities in prep school education
  • The ability to inspire and motivate students, colleagues and parents
  • The ability to work collaboratively and effectively with other members of the senior leadership team
  • A commitment to continuous professional development
  • A passion for English and literature.

Terms of Appointment

This is a permanent position offered on a full-time basis from September 2023. Working hours Monday – Saturday in accordance with terms dates, teaching and duty timetable.

Salary (Wycliffe Teaching Scale depending on chosen pension scheme)
