The Governors are seeking a Head for Princess Helena College (PHC) to succeed Mrs Sue Wallace-Woodroffe who will be leaving at the end of the Summer Term 2018 after more than three successful years.
The Governors wish to appoint an able, enthusiastic and imaginative leader who will continue to move the school forward in the spirit of continuous improvement.
Founded in 1820, and now housed in an inspiring 1714 Queen Anne mansion set in 100 acres of farm and parkland, PHC is one of England’s oldest girls’ schools. The school has around 200 pupils, 40 of whom are in the vibrant and familial sixth form and 70 are boarders. 10% of pupils are from overseas. The scale of the school enables a very personalised approach to how we educate our girls. This is one of the factors which sets us apart from other schools and is intrinsic to our culture.
From a broad intake, all girls are encouraged to achieve their full academic, sporting, musical, theatrical and artistic potential. A strong focus on developing pupil’s specific interests and talents is fundamental. In the words of one girl, “this school knows that all aspects of us are important”. An innovative enrichment programme focused on inspiring young women to make their mark on the 21st century is just one way in which this promise is honoured.
The Governors are seeking to appoint an outstanding and passionate candidate with the inspiration to lead the school into its next stage of growth, which will include curriculum development, provision of new facilities and increasing school numbers.
Ideally the Head will live in the beautiful school location in the comfortable accommodation provided.

About PHC Hitchin Independent School
Princess Helena College is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school for pupils aged 11 to 18. Boarding at PHC takes place in a single boarding house, currently all girls, opening to boys for boarding from Sept 2020.
The school has a rich history. It was founded in 1820 in London by Princess August and Mrs Sophia Williams as the Adult Orphanage Institute. Its purpose was to educate girls whose fathers had been in the services or the Church and had died. In 1874, Princess Helena, the third daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, became the school’s president.

Princess Helena College is set in 180 acres of rolling fields and woodlands. It has a strong ethos of individualism and hard work. As a small school, Princess Helena College takes care to give each pupil individual attention.
Pupils are encouraged to be excited by new challenges and stimulated by new learning experiences. The school’s main aims are to inspire, encourage and assist each pupil to realise their own potential and develop their strengths and skills.
