Job overview

The Head of Sixth Form will have responsibility for the day-to-day running of the Sixth Form, the academic progress and pastoral welfare of the Sixth Form students and the operation of the Sixth Form area.

As a more senior member of staff, the Head of Sixth Form will contribute to the overall leadership and management of the academy and be active in promoting its aims and supporting an ethos that promotes achievement and high standards.

The Head of Sixth Form will report to the Deputy Head or Assistant Head.

Main Areas of Responsibility

Your responsibilities will include:

  • To take a lead on developing and implementing a strategic plan for the Sixth Form that aligns to the academy vision and values, whilst also enabling future growth and sustainability.
  • To encourage students to contribute positively to the life of the Sixth Form and the wider life of the Academy
  • To develop and deliver a structured and purposeful tutorial programme
  • To monitor Sixth Form attainment and effort grades
  • To initiate and respond to communications with parents ensuring that they are kept fully informed and involved in the progress of their children.
  • To oversee all aspects of reference writing and the administration of the UCAS process
  • To review A level results in August and at other times during the year after each data drop, and to plan subsequent interventions
  • To ensure that the Senior Leadership Team and staff are advised regarding national developments with reference to university policies, careers and specific areas of Sixth Form curriculum
  • To take responsibility for the Sixth Form prospectus, associated publications and the Sixth Form area of the academy website
  • Monitor and enforce good attendance and punctuality, with regular communication to home when needed.
  • To play the leading role in the disciplining of students referring situations to the appropriate member of SLT when appropriate.
  • To organise the private study arrangements for Sixth Form students
  • To oversee the Sixth Form co-curricular programme including tutor time and enrichment
  • To work with Year 11 tutors and students and to ensure the smooth transfer of students to the Sixth Form
  • To organise and run the Sixth Form Open Evening for students and parents and other events as appropriate
  • To organise and coordinate a Year 12 induction programme
  • To manage the School Prefects, Head Boy and Head Girl
  • To lead and line manage the Sixth Form Team
  • To organise the collection and maintenance of student destinations

Qualifications & Experience

The successful candidate will have:

  • QTS (or equivalent) and a good undergraduate degree
  • Experience of leading, managing and supporting staff
  • Evidence of further professional development relevant to the post
  • Practical experience of successfully promoting equality of opportunity
  • Pastoral experience demonstrated by securing high levels of behaviour, attendance and commitment from students of all abilities and backgrounds
  • Successful experience of raising levels of attainment and progress
