Role Overview 

The Oxagon Librarian will be responsible for facilitating information literacy among scholars by developing and implementing library programs that promote reading, inquiry, critical thinking, and access to diverse learning resources and technologies. The librarian will also collaborate with teachers to integrate information literacy instruction into the curriculum, create strong connections between the library and classroom programs, and encourage patrons to utilize information literacy in a positive environment. The librarian will possess the ability to develop and maintain systems that support the library's mission to inspire and engage learners in an authentic American international education, nurture their passion for knowledge, and support their pursuit of academic and personal goals, while preparing them to become successful global citizens.

Job Responsibilities

Planning and Preparation for Learning

·        Plans lessons and units by following the AISJ curriculum framework in collaboration with ES teachers.

·        Supports in developing curriculum documentation that reflect horizontal and vertical alignment.

·        Demonstrates planning with consideration of differentiation needs, scholar engagement, and anticipates scholars’ misconceptions and confusions.

·        Demonstrates content knowledge in the areas of information, literacy, library science and social emotional learning.

·        Provides orientation and introduction of materials with classes on a particular topic on the invitation of the teachers.

·        Prepares effective instruction within the library to integrate information literacy skills into the curriculum for the library and in collaboration with classroom teachers.

·        Utilizes updated and research-based strategies to meet the needs of diverse learners.

·   Integrates information technology appropriately into the curriculum by modeling and promoting the use of information technology.

Professional Responsibilities

· Designs each lesson with clear, measurable goals closely aligned with standards and unit outcomes.

·        Collaborates with ES Teachers to plan units, share teaching ideas, and look at scholar work.

·        Seeks out effective teaching ideas from colleagues, workshops, and other sources and implements them well.

·        Maintains comprehensive and efficient system for cataloging all library materials and instructs teachers and scholars on use of the online catalog and other electronic resources.

·        Maintains literacy as a high priority, engaging scholars in reading, viewing and listening for understanding and enjoyment.

·        Ensures that scholars and staff are effective users of ideas and information.

·        Empowers scholars to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and ethical users of information.

·        Develops and maintains resources appropriate to the curriculum, the learners, and the instructional strategies used within the school community.

·        Has a knowledge of copyright, fair use, and licensing of intellectual property, in order to assist users with their understanding and observance of the same.

·        Plans and executes literacy events.

Delivery of Instruction

·     Promotes scholar-centered learning environment in the library through highly effective strategies, materials, and groupings to involve and motivate all scholars.

·     Promotes inquiry-based and concept-based learnings.

·     Supports scholars with understanding of their strengths and opportunities for development, setting their goals, and action planning

·     Promotes agency among scholars including voice, choice, and ownership.

·     Successfully reaches all scholars by skillfully differentiating and scaffolding.

·     Enriches the learning experience of scholars by engaging them in meaningful activities.

Monitoring & Follow-up

·     Frequently checks for understanding, adjusting teaching, re-teaching and following-up on scholar progress.

·     Has scholars set ambitious goals, continuously self-assess, give feedback, and take responsibility for improving performance.

·     Helps scholars develop as self-assessors and self-adjusters. 

Family and Community Outreach

·     Communicates respectfully with parents and is sensitive to different families’ cultures and values.

·     Shows parents a genuine interest and belief in each child’s ability to reach standards.

·     Gives parents clear expectations for scholar learning and behavior for the year.

·     Promptly informs parents of behavior and learning problems, and also updates parents on good news.

·     Updates parents on the unfolding curriculum and suggests ways to support learning at home. 

·     Responds promptly to parents' concerns and make parents feel welcome in the school.

Classroom Management

·     Is direct, specific, consistent, and tenacious in communicating and enforcing very high expectations.

·     Shows warmth, caring, respect, and fairness for all scholars and builds strong relationships.

·     Successfully inculcates library routines up front so that scholars maintain them throughout the year.

·     Gets all scholars to be self-disciplined, take responsibility for their actions, and have a strong sense of efficacy.

·     Helps scholars to develop habits of independent reference work and to develop skills in the use of reference materials.

Other Responsibilities

·      Engages with community in after-school activities 

·      Engages with community in open communication

·      Supervision duties will be assigned

·      After School Activity (1/week) and office hours (2/week)

·      Performs any other duties as assigned.
