Job overview

As part of the Senior Leadership Team and reporting directly to the Head Teacher, the successful candidate will have proven experience and the ability to plan, develop and deliver business services and maintain sound financial planning and budgetary control. In this role you will need to be able to provide leadership along with professional support and advice.

The School Business Manager promotes the highest standards of business ethos within the administrative function of the school and strategically ensures the most effective use of resources in support of the school’s learning objectives. Therefore, you will be responsible for the Financial Resource Management, Administration Management, Management Information, IT Strategy, Site Management, Catering and Health & Safety Management of the school.

The role of the business manager requires absolute honesty and integrity. The successful applicant will need to operate with initiative, be proactive and able to adapt to change in a vibrant and busy environment. We are looking for someone who is an exemplary role model and can serve the best interests of the school, its children, staff and community with enthusiasm, good humour and positivity.

The Business Manager will:

  • be responsible for line-managing support staff, including carrying out long-term resource planning and managing recruitment, appraisal and professional development
  • under the direction of the Head Teacher, lead on all financial matters in school
  • in partnership with the Head Teacher, manage and monitor the school's budget, ensuring it is balanced, realistic and represents an effective use of public funds
  • submit the budget to the governing body
  • prepare forecast budgets
  • comply with local authority's reporting regulations and submit statutory returns as required
  • oversee school bank accounts on a day to day basis
  • ensure the effective and efficient operation of the finance department, delegating tasks to the finance assistant or office staff as appropriate
  • manage the school's payroll and liaise with external provider
  • advise on HR issues and liaise with external provider
  • with the Head Teacher, be responsible for the strategic management of the school premises, collaborating with the Site Manager
  • monitor and review all maintenance schedules and service contracts
  • be responsible for the lettings policy
  • formulate, monitor, implement and review the school's Health and Safety policy
  • plan the effective provision of ICT resources for the administrative function of the school
  • be responsible for the supervision of ICT technicians
  • manage the asset register
  • manage the school's compliance with GDPR and FOI and advise as required
  • monitor all school policies and ensure they are updated in accordance with the review schedule
  • keep records in accordance with the school's retention schedule and DP law, ensuring information security and confidentiality at all times.
