We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, well qualified, highly effective and inspirational Teacher of Religious Education who has the commitment to academic excellence and in helping every child succeed across the ability range and in all Key Stages. The teacher should be willing to teach Key Stage 3 and GCSE RS, and OCR A Level.

The Barking Abbey RE Department is an exceptionally successful department with a small, close-knit team of excellent teachers who work together in a supportive and collaborative manner. Our teachers are passionate and have motivated students and driven RS forward to be a popular option at both Key Stage Four and Key Stage Five (with over 70 students studying RS at A level) achieving excellent results well above national average (87% 9-4 at GCSE 2022.) The students at Barking Abbey have high aspirations and a willingness to learn.

We are seeking to find an innovative and motivational teacher of RE who is an exceptional practitioner who wants to make a real difference to the lives of our pupils through their teaching. We are seeking find a teacher who is able to plan and teach interesting and inspirational lessons with excellent subject knowledge. You will be welcomed into a hardworking, collaborative department and given many opportunities for professional development as the department takes part in frequent CPD in the school, borough-wide and nationally.

The school achieved a Progress 8 score of +0.31 in 2019, placing it in the top 20% of schools in the country.

Recruitment process

Our recruitment process is fair and transparent and designed to get the best candidate for the role. A sample of our recruitment process is listed below

  • Advert placed on TES, internally and in LBBD boards
  • Blind shortlisting by a panel against the Job description. Potential applicants are   scored. Shortlisting by at least 3 people including one SLT.
  • Shortlist for interview based on scores from shortlisting.
  • Interview process will depend on role and may include; lesson observations, data or admin tasks, panel interviews, student panels and a final interview
  • All assessed tasks are scored according to set criteria and scores are moderated   to ensure consistency.
  • All panel interviews and final interviews are scored. Each interview has a   moderation process to ensure consistency of scores where appropriate. Questions are common to all applicants.
  • Feedback is provided by a member of the panel.


Ofsted report

A clear theme running through the school is the positive behaviour of pupils and their excellent attitudes to their work. Pupils are keen to do well and seize the opportunities given by teachers to work hard. They conduct themselves well around the school and are polite and respectful towards others. These attitudes have a strong impact on pupils' achievements because they enable learning to take place without undue interruption.
