Job overview

Bourne Grammar School is a dynamic educational community built on strong ethical foundations. We believe in supporting all members of our school, whether they be students or staff, and we share a commitment to fostering a positive atmosphere and promoting the best possible outcomes for all. As an employer we ensure strong professional development opportunities and encourage staff to identify ways in which they can improve and develop. We believe in adjusting to individual need and treating individuals as individuals. Leadership within the school is characterised by collaboration, consultation and a willingness to listen.

Bourne Grammar School is committed to promoting equality of opportunity for all students and staff, both current and prospective, and in this position, you will actively support an environment and culture that values diversity and inclusion.

Applications are invited to join the Spanish Department, rated as an outstanding department by OFSTED in the most recent OFSTED inspection in October 2022. The department strives to be at the forefront of teaching and learning in the School and is passionate about teaching Spanish in a dynamic and inspirational way.

Spanish is a core subject in Bourne Grammar School which follows our School’s ethos of developing a challenging and academically ambitious curriculum for our students. Therefore, we want to inspire in our pupils a love for languages and raise their awareness of different cultures in the world. We aim to create opportunities for students to enrich their personal development through exposure to a new language and culture.

The Spanish department is well established. We are a team of nine teachers and one Language Assistant. There are four native level speakers in the department. We pride ourselves on our ethos of supportive and collaborative working and we have a wide variety of resources to support teaching and learning.

Our curriculum is academically ambitious in such a way that at all Key Stages, Spanish provision goes beyond the text books that we follow and extension tasks are a regular part of lessons and homework. There is a heavy use of Target Language in the classroom both by pupils and teachers. Some lessons are delivered almost entirely in Spanish. In KS3 there is an introduction of lots of grammar which is consolidated and built upon in KS4. From Year 7, students are exposed to grammatical terms and are expected to understand and use these when referring to language. At GCSE level, the top sets are taught an academically demanding course which goes far beyond the limitations of the GCSE in order to prepare our top linguists for A Level. At A Level, our students discuss current and complex topics with a native level speaker and have to access and understand a variety of authentic materials.

Classes in Year 7 have 6-hour periods per fortnight. From Years 8 to 11, students receive 5-hour periods per fortnight. Spanish is a popular option at A-level and students receive 9 hours per fortnight with a weekly speaking session with our Language Assistant in small groups. In Year 8 students have the opportunity to go to Spain to further enrich their studies. A-Level students also get the opportunity to visit Seville to enhance their understanding of the cultural elements of the course whilst receiving language lessons.

Grades are excellent at both GCSE and A-level. In the last set of results, 47% of the GCSE cohort achieved a grade 7-9. At A-level, 80% of our students achieved A*-A.
