We are looking for a candidate with a proven track record of securing good outcomes for students across the secondary age range, but also for someone with a real passion for improving the 16-19 experience and outcomes.

At a time when there is significant change in the 16-19 curriculum and challenges around funding, we are proud to retain a comprehensive 11-19 provision in East Calderdale and are proud of the range of courses offered. Your role, should be successful, will be support this thriving provision to develop and strengthen that offer for years to come.

Our vibrant Sixth Form College is situated on a separate post-16 site approximately one mile from the main school campus. Many staff members teach and support across both sites building familiarity and continuity in for our own students who progress to our post-16 provision, but the separate site also provides an exciting opportunity to learn and work in a college environment and this attracts additional students from wide distance across Calderdale, Kirklees and Bradford.

Our February 2022 inspection, Ofsted recognised that "There is an acute awareness of what pupils need to support them in their stage of learning or employment. This runs through the school from Year 7 to the sixth form".

Brighouse High School Context and Ethos

Brighouse High School is a school which has high expectations and is uncompromising in working to meet the needs of individual pupils. Our school is oversubscribed and has consistently served the community of Brighouse and the surrounding area, always developing and building on consistent good practice and ensuring that positive experiences of student and staff development are partnered with good outcomes for the students. Our School Direct Programme is also growing rapidly as we move to ensure that we engage, train and retain the best teachers for our students.

Pupils, including students in the sixth form, are proud to attend the school. They feel safe and cared for. Pupils feel they can speak to any member of staff if they have concerns or worries.

Positive relationships are a cornerstone of the school and allow pupils to express themselves with confidence.

Pupils believe the school takes their well-being seriously. One pupil told an inspector, ‘Everyone cares at Brighouse.’

The atmosphere around school and in lessons is calm. Pupils behave well and engage positively in lessons. Pupils are polite and respectful towards each other and staff.

Ofsted 2022

Leadership Structure

The senior team currently comprises of the Headteacher, three Deputy Headteachers, one Associate Deputy Headteacher and six Assistant Headteachers.

Intake of pupils and the Area served by the School

Brighouse is a compact market town situated close to the Pennines, the Yorkshire Dales and the M62. The cities of Leeds and Bradford are within easy access. The traditional industrial base of the town was textiles and engineering but this has been replaced by a much more diverse economy supporting a number of small workshop enterprises.

The School draws the majority of its pupils from Brighouse and the marginal villages which surround the town. The pupil intake is of varied socio-economic background and from a wide range of housing from the town houses of Brighouse to the suburbs of Clifton, Lightcliffe and Hove Edge.

Brighouse High School is committed to providing a first class education for all its pupils and has developed strong links with the community of Brighouse and district.

There are currently 1373 pupils, including 330 in the Sixth Form. The school is popular with parents and is consistently oversubscribed.

Accommodation

The school currently occupies two sites. Years 7-11 occupy premises at Hove Edge, a pleasant residential area about one mile away from the town centre and the sixth form college is housed in a 19th century, impressive building in the centre of Brighouse with easy access from the bus station.
