Job overview

Assistant Headteacher (English)

Permanent role/Full time

Commencing September 2024

Our school has been growing rapidly as we have taken thirty extra students into Year 7 every year for the last five, and now we have close to 2000 students meaning we are significantly oversubscribed. This growth is coupled with our new onsite Resourced Provision (ASD focus) and work that will begin soon on our long-awaited 24 classroom block. Due to this there needs to be a subsequent increase in staffing.

Having maintained our Good judgement from Ofsted (September 2023) we are looking at the next stage for our school’s development and believe now is the time to increase our team of senior leaders. All of the school’s Leadership Team have teaching commitments, which also drives the requirement to expand the team to allow us to maintain our availability to students, staff and other stakeholders.

This is a new position to increase the senior team and provide strategic leadership for our English subject area: a vital and core area of the school. The English team benefits from having skilled, experienced and committed teachers and the successful applicant would be part of this.

If you are interested in working in a large, dynamic, busy and genuinely comprehensive school, please feel free to contact us for a conversation about the role and/or a tour of the school plus an opportunity to meet members of the team you could be working with.

Roles and responsibilities include:

  • Support and deputise for the Deputy Headteacher when required.
  • To assist in leading the school by providing a clear vision and communicating the vision to all members of the school community
  • Understand issues relating to the organisation, ordering and funding of resources
  • Carry out teaching duties in accordance with the school's schemes of work and National Curriculum
  • Promote the professional development of teachers through review, learning walks, classroom observation, performance management and regular discussion about learning
  • Use data effectively in monitoring student learning and evaluating the performance of the school
  • Monitor the performance of specific subject areas or Year teams and support and challenge appropriately
  • To produce any school Policies or procedures required by the Headteacher
  • To deputise for the Headteacher when required by the Headteacher or Governing Body
  • To carry out any other reasonable task at the request of the Headteacher.
  • Provide the strategic vision, leadership and direction of the curriculum area to ensure high-quality teaching so that students reach the highest levels of achievement and attainment.
  • Support the leadership of English to ensure the effective operation of the wider English curriculum

We can offer you:

  • The opportunity to work within a friendly, dedicated and motivated team
  • Proactive support for your career development
  • An approachable and supportive Leadership team and Governing body

 Closing date:

Friday 17th May, 9am

Interviews will be held: w/c 20th May

The School

Bingley Grammar School is a 11 – 18 Voluntary Aided Comprehensive School with a roll of 1500 in the lower school and 400 in the 6th Form. The oldest of the current buildings dates from 1853 and the newest from 2000,  the major part having been built in the 1930s. Under a BSF scheme due to commence in 2012 most of these buildings will be replaced.
The school occupies a semi-rural site on the north bank of the River Aire upstream of Bingley. It has played a key role in the town and the surrounding area since its foundation in 1529. Perhaps its most famous pupil is Sir Fred Hoyle, one of the 20th century's most eminent astronomers. The school's pride in his achievements was acknowledged last summer when a blue plaque was unveiled in his memory.

Bingley

Bingley is a market town with a 30,000 population set in the picturesque Aire Valley halfway between Bradford and Keighley. The town is a 20 minute drive from Skipton, the gateway to the Yorkshire Dales with its stunning Pennine scenery. It is also close to the famous Ilkley Moor and the important literary shrine, the Bronte village of Haworth with its Parsonage Museum, home to the Bronte sisters. Bingley, once a key centre of the woollen industry, specialising in the finest worsted cloth, is now a popular commuter district for Bradford, Leeds and the Aire Valley with a good local train and bus service. Among its attractions is the Five Rise Locks on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, one of the engineering marvels of the 18th century.
