Behaviour Coordinator

Job Description 

• Work with the Behaviour Lead to support pupils who experience barriers to learning related to behaviour, emotional regulation, or engagement.  

• Deliver planned behaviour interventions and support strategies with pupils on a one‑to‑one basis, in small groups, or within class settings.  

• Support pupils during periods of transition or reintegration, including following suspension or extended absence.  

• Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils, acting as a consistent and supportive adult.  

• Encourage pupils to reflect on their behaviour and develop skills to make informed choices about learning and conduct. 

• Support staff in implementing agreed behaviour strategies and individual behaviour plans, under the guidance of the Behaviour Lead.  

• Model effective behaviour management strategies and support staff in responding consistently to pupils’ needs.  

• Provide informal coaching and advice to staff where appropriate, escalating concerns or training needs to the Behaviour Lead.  

• Work collaboratively with teaching staff, pastoral teams, and the trans‑disciplinary team to ensure a joined‑up approach. 

• Support the Behaviour Lead in monitoring the impact of behaviour interventions and recording outcomes.  

• Maintain accurate records relating to behaviour support, incidents, and interventions in line with school procedures.  

• Support staff in recording behaviour incidents appropriately and consistently.  

• Contribute to reviews of behaviour support plans and pupil risk assessments.  

• Share relevant observations and feedback with the Behaviour Lead to inform next steps and planning. 

• Support communication with parents/carers regarding behaviour strategies and support in place for their child.  

• Attend meetings with parents/carers as required, alongside the Behaviour Lead or other staff.  

• Reinforce consistency between home and school approaches where appropriate. 

• Support the Behaviour Lead in liaising with external agencies such as CAMHS, social care, education welfare, and educational psychologists 

• Contribute information and observations to referrals and reviews as requested. 

• Work in line with statutory safeguarding guidance (e.g. Keeping Children Safe in Education) and school safeguarding policies.  

• Remain vigilant to safeguarding concerns and report these promptly in line with school procedures.  

• Promote the safety and wellbeing of all pupils at all times. 

• Carry out duties consistent with the role as directed by the Behaviour Lead or Senior Leadership Team.  

• Engage in relevant training and professional development related to behaviour, SEND, and safeguarding.

Person Specification 

Essential 

Experience 

• Experience of working directly with children and young people, ideally those with SEND or autism. 

• Experience of supporting pupils with behaviour, emotional regulation, or engagement difficulties.  

• Experience of working as part of a multidisciplinary or pastoral team in a school or similar setting. 

Skills and Experience 

• Good understanding of positive behaviour support and restorative approaches.  

• Ability to build positive, trusting relationships with pupils, including those who are hard to engage.  

• Ability to support staff in implementing behaviour strategies consistently.  

• Understanding of safeguarding responsibilities and procedures in an educational setting.  

• Ability to record, monitor, and report on behaviour incidents accurately and professionally. 

Personal Qualities and Attributes 

• Calm, patient, and emotionally resilient when working with behaviours that challenge.  

• Reflective and willing to learn from feedback and supervision.  

• Professional, reliable, and able to follow direction from the Behaviour Lead and senior staff.  

• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.

Desirable 

Experience 

• Experience working in a special school. 

• Experience delivering targeted behaviour interventions (e.g. small group or one‑to‑one work). 

Skills and Knowledge 

• Familiarity with behaviour policies, behaviour support plans, and pupil risk assessments. 

• Experience liaising with parents/carers regarding behaviour or pastoral support. 

• Experience contributing to multi‑agency meetings or providing information to external professionals. 

Qualifications and Training 

• Relevant qualification or training in education, SEND, behaviour support, youth work, or pastoral care. 

• Training in de‑escalation, or emotional regulation strategies.
