Coordinator of Woodwind, Brass and Percussion - Whole School

Co-curricular Education at Canberra Grammar School is an important and exciting learning opportunity for all students in Kindergarten to Year 12.  We offer a rich array of activities intended to appeal to every mind, body and heart.  Students and staff actively engage in physical, cultural and intellectual pursuits together, building relationships, understanding and respect beyond the classroom borders.  Our program is organised into Sports, Arts and Horizons (Enrichment, Service and Fellowship).  Participation options vary depending on a student’s year group, with all students in Years 3-10 expected to represent the school in at least one CGS Core Sport per year. Adventure (Primary School) and Outdoor Education (Senior School) opportunities are offered as well, including interstate and international trips and tours for some activities.

Engagement in the Co-curricular Program enables students to discover their strengths and talents, and to learn about commitment and goal setting.  Our program is about developing character, connecting with our community and having an appreciation of service and fellowship. Students have the chance to enhance their leadership skills, resilience and well-being.  As an IB World School, our Co-curricular Education Program is inspired by the CAS (Creativity, Activity and Service) core component of the diploma program, and an emphasis on individual goal setting, reflection and a balanced selection of activities throughout a student’s participation in the program is encouraged.  Many activities run as extension and enrichment opportunities, offering explicit links to the school’s academic curriculum, and are a chance for students to apply and consolidate their learning.

The Coordinator of Woodwind, Brass and Percussion will have a clearly defined and significant leadership role developing the instrumental programme within the School.  Vital to the effective running of any Music programme is a degree of organisation and coordination.  

The qualities of the successful applicant would need to include:

• Minimum of Bachelor of Music/Instrumental Education degree recognised by TQI
• Extensive experience conducting and developing a sequential bands program, both in the concert band and jazz band genre
• Significant experience in motivating and leading instrumental music staff
• Well-developed administrative and organisational skills
• Proven ability to work effectively in a diverse and vibrant team
• Proven ability to communicate effectively and develop a strong and trusting relationship with all members of the school community and wider community
• Educational philosophy that maintains the student’s experience at its centre The majority of the role will consist of the development of the wind, brass and percussion program across the four school campuses.  The full time position will initially be structured with 0.2 load for administration, 0.2 load for classroom teaching, 0.3 load for ensemble direction and 0.3 load for individual and small group instrument teaching.  

The role will include: 

• Development of a coherent and cohesive pedagogy and curriculum of instrumental teaching across the teaching team and the four school campus
• Responsibility for the development of the bands performance program (concert and jazz bands) in consultation with the HOPAL, Music HOD and relevant staff 
• Contributing to the teaching and enhancement of the Primary School Instrumental Opportunities Program
•  Individual and small group instrumental teaching of students from year 2 to year 12
•  Classroom music teaching at the secondary school level 
• Conducting instrumental ensembles at all levels of development across the four school campus
•  Administration associated with the academic and co-curricular music programs
