The School

Nishkam High School opened in September 2012. The video footage on YouTube showing the ‘Building of Nishkam High School’ is an essential starting point for any interested candidate. The ‘new’ DfE built school opened in April 2014 and a visit to our truly inspirational building is highly recommended. Please contact the school on: 0121 348 7660 and we will be happy to make arrangements for you to have a look around.

OFSTED visited one day after the new school was opened. Read the details of their judgements at:

Our first GCSE results (summer, 2017) yielded:

a Progress 8 score of +0.95 (top 1% of all schools nationally

an Attainment 8 score of 54.72 (top 13% of all schools nationally).

Overview of the role

This is a unique and exciting opportunity to be a part of a team that will be building a faculty from its near foundation and to establish a new culture in a brand new 11-18 school that opened in September 2012. The school is significantly advanced in its response to life after levels and will provide an excellent support programme for the successful applicant.

The role will offer the opportunity to lead a Faculty that delivers French, Punjabi and some Italian. The Faculty’s first GCSE results (summer, 2017) delivered:

· 21 A*/A grades out of 61 total grades

· 77% A* - C grades

· An EBac Progress 8 score of +1.543

The role will be to lead and teach languages across Key Stages 3 and 4 initially as well as helping to shape and implement a Key Stage 5 curriculum that recruits students and delivers quality outcomes. An ability to teach two languages would be a distinct advantage but not a complete necessity. You will be leading and liaising with other members of the modern foreign languages (3 staff FTE) faculty to create a curriculum based on ‘excellence’ from which ‘all children can, and will, achieve’. You will lead on planning lessons and schemes of learning that deliver excellence, to assess and monitor pupil progress and also to ensure that appropriate interventions are implemented as required.

You will be joining a vibrant faculty that is characterised by passion for their subject and the support of students and each other. Leadership in this curriculum area is expected from all and each member of the faculty has already played an integral part in making the faculty successful.

The Trust You will be working with a pioneering group, Nishkam School Trust, which is a flagship DfE Free School Trust, and the first multi-faith academy trust in the UK. At the core of Nishkam education is the triple pursuit of nurturing a strong values-led approach to life, academic excellence and creating a community that supports children throughout their lives

To apply:

  • You need to complete an application form, which you can download from our website www.nishkamschool.org/recruitment or contact the school office on 0121 348 7660
  • Applications to be sent to recruitment.nhsb@nishkamschools.org by midday on Monday, February 5, 2018
  • Successful applicants will be contacted by Tuesday, February 6, 2018
  • Interviews will be held Monday, February 12, 2018

This is a key role within the school but the successful candidate will also be expected to also work closely with the Trust Directors and contribute to driving the Standards agenda forward in all Nishkam schools. A flexible, innovative and energetic approach is, therefore, an essential requirement, as is a commitment to being a team player.

Nishkam School Trust (NST) are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expect all staff and volunteers to share in this commitment. Any successful applicant will be required to undertake an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service Check.

Values and vision

Nishkam High School's values are summarised by both the school slogan, "excellence in doing ordinary things extraordinarily well", and the school name, with the word "nishkam" translating as "selflessness". The school emphasises the Sikh value of serving others and welcomes children of all faiths and none.

With a diverse curriculum including music and physical education, the secondary school also has a strong spiritual focus. Its ethos is based on 24 spiritual and moral dispositions on topics such as compassion and creativity. The school is about "more than academic excellence", is "more than a school" and encourages students to look after "more than self".

Ofsted report

“The school provides a rich education for students that include library lessons and opportunities for them to engage in public speaking, as well as providing an extended school day. Students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is promoted outstandingly well. The effectiveness of the sixth form is outstanding and students have courses tailored to their needs which enable them to develop their talents.”
