Job overview
Following the decision of Jim Hawkins to take on a senior management role in a global education initiative, after seven outstanding years as Head Master, the Governors of Harrow School wish to appoint an inspiring and exceptional leader to lead the School. Whilst the school has a distinguished history, and maintains a number of its traditions to this day, Governors recognise the importance of innovation and the need to remain relevant in modern society. As such, they have been at the forefront of developing a family of Harrow International Schools overseas, and closer to home the School has a significant focus on outreach and public benefit. The School was founded by John Lyon in 1572, and remains part of the John Lyon’s Foundation which also comprises The John Lyon School and a substantial grant-giving charity, John Lyon’s Charity, which is committed to furthering his vision of educational opportunity. The School also has a significant alumni association and a successful development office which operates as a separate charity.
The next Head Master will provide strategic direction for Harrow School, while maintaining and developing the strength of the school community, across all areas. The Head Master will be someone who believes in boarding schools, and understands and enjoys the particular requirements of boys’ education. The Head Master will be expected to work within the John Lyon’s Foundation and the broader Harrow family, including the Harrow International Schools.
The successful candidate will have a depth of leadership experience and credibility on which to draw, in what is both a demanding role and one that is full of opportunity. The Governors wish to recruit someone who has intellectual acuity and commercial awareness, together with the outstanding communication skills, necessary for high frequency interaction with both adults and teenage boys alike. Critically, the next Head Master will be genuinely excited about the chance to lead one of the world’s pre-eminent boarding schools.

About Harrow School

The School is located on a 324-acre estate which encompasses much of Harrow on the Hill and is one of the best-known schools in the world. Around 837 boys study at Harrow and live in the School’s 12 boarding houses. Employees particularly value the School’s beautiful green estate, the positive working environment, and good relationships with their colleagues.
Harrow School is an independent boarding secondary school for boys aged 13-18. It was established, by royal charter, in 1572 during the reign of Elizabeth I. It is operated as a Royal Charter Corporation, which is a charitable trust whose trustees are the school’s governors. The school licenses the Harrow name to a number of schools in Asia.

Values and vision
Harrow School believes that the success of students should not be measured purely by grades, but by their influence on the wider world.
The school believes that all organisations need strong and clearly expressed values to create identity, focus, unity and drive, and in order to answer the questions: “what do we belong to?”, “what’s important to us?”, "why do our collective efforts matter?”, and “what holds us together?”.
Harrow’s values of courage, honour, humility and fellowship aim to help the school to make decisions from day-to-day that mean members of its community behave and perform better. These four Values link closely to Harrow School’s Christian foundation, and the principles of “Godliness and good learning” established by its founder, John Lyon.
ISI report
“Pupils are high achievers in all areas of their academic lives. Their success owes much to the strong and supportive boarding community to which they all belong and which gives the encouragement to work hard and aim high, and the confidence to set themselves ambitious goals.”
“Pupils invariably work hard and utilise their strong motivation and desire to succeed, and this is one of the main drivers in their success. The strong progress they make, and their all-round excellent achievement is enabled by many innovative approaches and initiatives introduced by school leaders.”
