Job overview

RST is selective and a reasonable ability in English is part of the selection criteria. Approximately 65% of RST students are native English speakers, though many of these speak good English and do not require EAL support.

The successful applicant will lead the English as an Additional Language (EAL) department in the Pre-Prep School (Pre-Nursery to Year 2) with a particular focus on students in Reception and KS1. He/she will report to the whole School RST Co-ordinator of EAL and to the Pre-Prep Deputy Head (Academic). Currently there are six EAL Teachers within the Pre-Prep School and EAL support is provided both within the classroom and in individual or small group sessions.

Within the EAL department, we also run an ‘Intensive English’ programme, for students who enter the School with little or no English. These children spend the majority of their time with their IE teacher, learning language, reading and eventually writing skills through a range of topic based activities. These children are assessed regularly, and when they are ready are phased back into classes with EAL support put in place as needed.

As Head of EAL at Pre-Prep you will:

  • Ensure the smooth running of the EAL department within the Pre-Prep
  • Manage the teaching timetable of Pre-Prep EAL teachers alongside the Head of Pre-Prep and Deputy Head Academic
  • Manage the EAL budget
  • Act as line-manager for Pre-Prep EAL teachers; supporting them in their development cycle (appraisal and professional development opportunities)
  • Work alongside the whole school Co-ordinator of EAL to ensure continuity throughout RST
  • Ensure all Pre-Prep teachers recognise and fulfil their responsibilities to students with EAL and IE needs
  • Ensure all children feel they are supported in developing their IE/EAL needs through showing empathy and understanding, and leading direction and motivation
  • Work closely with class teachers in identifying children who require specialist IE/EAL teaching
  • Set targets for raising achievement among children with EAL needs
  • Liaise with parents regarding the children and their progress and ensure that the EAL dept place high importance on communications with parents
  • Communicate effectively with finances regarding the invoicing of EAL children
  • Collect and interpret assessment data for children with EAL needs alongside the Deputy Head Academic
  • Meet regularly with the Head of Pre-Prep to report on progress of identified children and planned strategies for support

Closing Date: 2nd January 2023

Contract Term: 2 Years
