Job overview
At Horizons Academy, we aspire to provide the best possible experience for all of our pupils, which is underpinned by our core values of Relationships, Respect, Resilience and Readiness.
Our aim is to create a positive learning environment, where each pupil feels safe and happy to contribute to the wider school community.
All pupils that attend Horizons Academy can expect support to achieve their goals, whether that be towards positive outcomes at the end of Key stage 4 or an opportunity to be re-integrated into a mainstream or specialist setting.
The Head of English will be expected to lead the English Department including coordination of all long-term and medium-term planning, assessments and accreditation delivered in relation to the subject area.
You will be part of the school’s middle leadership team and take responsibility for the quality of teaching and learning in the English department, coaching staff to deliver lessons which are good to outstanding and support pupils to make good or better progress.
As part of the role, you will be required to analyse data in relation to learning and behavior and use this to inform planning and the targeting of interventions to close the gap for vulnerable learners.
In addition, you will teach students across Key Stages 3 and 4 who are accessing education at the PRU on either short term (KS3) or long term Programmes (KS4).
As part of your wider-school leadership role, you will be required to lead the development of curriculum innovations in English, whilst contributing to behaviour management strategies, accreditation, policies and procedures within the school and across the Trust.

Horizons Academy Bexley provides high quality education and support to pupils in Key Stages 1-4, who have been permanently excluded or are at risk of exclusion from their mainstream school. We also provide a short-term provision at our Satellite centre for learners, who are unable to attend school because of a medical need.
We focus on early intervention, offering a range of services from short term respite to longer term education for students in KS4.
Our aim in KS1 – 3 is to re-integrate the learners back into a mainstream or specialist school via our ‘Refocus programme’. We work closely with external agencies and our partner schools to identify the needs of the child, develop the child’s ability to learn, so that each learner feels confident about being in the classroom.
