Job overview

THE ROLE

Pimlico Academy has an exciting opportunity available for an ambitious, enthusiastic and committed Head of English from April or September 2023.

The Head of Department will provide leadership, develop the quality of teaching and ensure high quality learning takes place and that outstanding attainment and progress is secured at all Key Stages.

In developing the Curriculum provision, the Head of English will work closely with the Curriculum Centre and Trust subject leads, aligning their work with the Future Curriculum Design principles and Eight Habits. In KS3, there is a Trust requirement to use centrally produced Curriculum Centre resources.

The Head of Department will also be responsible for creating a happy, dynamic, innovative culture in the department and ensuring all staff are performing to an outstanding standard and are happy and motivated in doing so.

WHO WE ARE

Pimlico Academy is a flourishing mixed, non-selective secondary school and sixth form based in Pimlico, London, admitting students from the ages of 11 to 18.

We are part of Future Academies, a Multi-Academy Trust which includes three primary schools and seven secondary schools in and around London and Hertfordshire. We are motivated by a mission of social change and reducing educational inequality. We are unique in our approach to a knowledge-rich curriculum; our school motto is Libertas per cultum (Freedom through education), and in our strong emphasis on raising young people’s aspirations and outcomes through the teaching of classical and traditional subjects. Our children and young people study a bespoke curriculum developed by researchers at our Curriculum Centre, which places a focus on developing their cultural literacy and their awareness of the forces, words and events that have shaped our society today.

THE BENEFITS

  • The chance to make a difference to children’s and young people’s lives. Future Academies is of the belief that all children have the right to enriching education through a knowledge-rich and child-centric approach: our teachers can therefore make a dramatic impact on the lives of these children.
  • Fast career progression. Because knowledge and intelligence, rather than length of service, are lauded and rewarded at Future Academies, teachers and support staff can quickly take up great responsibility, adding to their already exceptional experience and knowledge, joining the SLT or writing for the Trust’s Curriculum Centre, where our in-house textbooks are produced.
  • Excellent CPD. The Trust is knowledge-centric and encourages CPD at all levels with excellent opportunities for swift career progression, within the Academy and Trust. This includes Leadership Development opportunities.
  • Knowledge-rich staff team. You will be working with a supportive leadership team, cohesive staff body, and very purposeful environment with excellent resources. Being part of a Trust of schools enables you to share knowledge across a wider range of educational professionals.

About Pimlico Academy

Pimlico Academy is a mixed ability non-fee paying school for 11-19 year olds. The academy opened in September 2008 and is sponsored by Future Academies. The academy became an all-through school, 3 to 19, from September 2013 when the first Reception class started at our on-site primary school, Pimlico Primary.

The academy has improved rapidly since taking over from the predecessor school and was judged good by Ofsted in December 2021. The percentage of students achieving 5 GCSE 9 -4 grades with Maths and English has improved from 36% to 69%. 90% of students achieved A*-C at A Level in 2016.

The distinguishing factor at Pimlico is our determination to provide pupils with the same standard of education that is on offer at the best independent schools and to ensure all pupils leave the academy as culturally literate young adults. The academy’s sponsor has established The Curriculum Centre to develop and implement a knowledge-based curriculum. We have an excellent Raising Aspirations programme, extensive extra-curricular provision, academic intervention tutors and a wide array of support to enable students to reach their potential.

We employ only very well-qualified staff who are committed to knowledge-rich education and embody a determination to ensure every pupil at Pimlico is hardworking, articulate, literate, ambitious, independent, confident, courteous and compassionate.
