Job overview

West Lodge School is looking to recruit a part-time Head of Music for our happy and welcoming school. The successful applicant will have overall responsibility for the coordination and leadership of music across the school for our children aged between 3-11 years of age.

Music has a very high profile at West Lodge and this is an exciting opportunity for a music specialist to manage a team of peripatetic teachers whilst leading and developing the subject. We are a small school with 176 pupils and it is for this reason that this is a part-time role of 2 – 2.5 days per week. In addition to the class teaching responsibility, the successful candidate will arrange formal and informal concerts, lead the orchestra and school choir, support school productions and take a leading role in special assemblies. Promoting music across the school is a key element of the postholder’s role because music is a key part of the children’s West Lodge experience and the school has a strong tradition of musical excellence.

Applicants should note that there could also be the opportunity to deliver peripatetic lessons to pupils to enhance the role with additional hours, but this is not necessarily a requirement and can be discussed at interview. It should be noted by applicants that there is some flexibility with regard to the role. This is an excellent opportunity for an inspiring and talented teacher.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • lead, inspire and motivate students and colleagues;
  • think and plan strategically;
  • teach Music across EYFS -KS2 and to all abilities;
  • develop extra-curricular activities to foster a love of the subject;
  • offer innovative ideas and strategies for curriculum and subject development;
  • be an excellent team player who is passionate about all pupils succeeding and achieving their best;
  • be able to organise music exams
  • have a genuine passion for teaching and inspiring pupils to learn, to push those who are able and to support those who require more guidance.

We offer the following benefits:

  • Private pension with generous employer contribution rate including salary sacrifice where eligible.
  • A delicious free school lunch and complimentary refreshments.
  • Relevant Continuous Professional Development (CPD) opportunities.
  • A highly supportive and friendly working environment.

About West Lodge School

West Lodge is a co-educational preparatory school for 3 - 11 year olds, providing a caring, secure and intellectually challenging environment in which our pupils feel valued and are able to learn successfully.

Founded in 1940 by the late Margery Corke with just 6 pupils on roll, today West Lodge School is an educational trust with over 170 pupils on roll. The School is non-selective at our main point of entry in the Nursery class, which children join in the September following their 3rd birthday.

At West Lodge we recognise the clear need to invest in a high standard of primary education. We aim to provide excellent and positive teaching in a working atmosphere that will foster the overall development of each child during the time that he or she is with us.

The National Curriculum is at the core of the School’s curriculum but it is enhanced and enriched by the inclusion of a wider range of experiences.  Subjects taught at present include: English, Mathematics, Science, Computing, Religious Education, Music, Drama, French, Spanish, History, Geography, Design Technology, Art, Cookery, PE, PSHE and Swimming.

Great emphasis is placed on a thorough grounding in basic learning skills, with literacy and numeracy seen as key elements in the foundation upon which future learning will be built.  Particular care is taken to extend the most gifted children and support the less able.  The School has a consistent record of a high entry to independent schools and local selective schools.

We have a strong focus on metacognition and children are challenged to use their 'learning powers' to be the the best learners they can be: https://www.westlodge.org.uk/growth-mindset

Our latest inspection by the Independent Schools Inspectorate was in April 2022 and rated West Lodge as excellent in all sixteen areas.  You can read the full report here:https://www.westlodge.org.uk/inspection-report
