About this Role

The Head of Faculty is responsible for all aspects of the work of the curriculum area or areas which form their designated areas of responsibility. The core focus of the Head of Faculty’s role is raising pupil achievement. Central to this is leading and guiding staff working within the designated curriculum area(s), and, in so doing, fostering an environment within which teaching and learning is the key priority with a desire for it to be of the highest possible quality and each member of the team is able to develop to the full the pupils in our care.

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, innovative, and committed Head of Technology Faculty.  The Technology Faculty encompasses Product Design, Design Technology, Engineering, Food Technology, Computing and Health & Social Care.   Ideally we are looking for someone with the ability to teach within the Design Technology / Engineering subjects but there may be some flexibility around this for the right applicant. Currently, the technology curriculum covers all key stages 3-5. 

The role is to provide day to day leadership for the faculty and be accountable for the quality of teaching, learning and educational outcomes within the Faculty ensuring they are in line with the school’s development plan.

Information about the Technology Faculty

The Technology faculty is made up of 9 teaching staff (8 FTE) and 1 support staff in a close-knit team.  Teachers teach mainly in their own areas of strength / expertise but they are also very flexible and are sometimes expected to teach some lessons outside of their usual disciplines.   

All rooms in the faculty are well resourced and are either brand new or newly refurbished. They include two brand new food rooms, two brand new computer suites, a bespoke textiles room,  a multi materials room with added IT facilities, one predominantly woodwork room and one predominantly metal work room. 

At Key Stage 3 we offer a 3-subject rotation carousel in Y7/8. This comprises electronics/graphics, resistant materials/engineering and food/textiles. In Y9 students do a mini rotation from September to Christmas, then pick a specialism of either food, product design or engineering which they continue to do until the end of the summer term.

At Key Stage 4 we offer a balanced and varied curriculum containing both academic and vocational options. We run GCSE Food and Nutrition, WJEC Hospitality and Catering, VCert Engineering and GCSE Engineering. We also offer GCSE Design Technology.

At Post-16 we offer Edexcel A Level Product Design and have a rapidly growing cohort of students opting to do this. We also offer Cambridge Technical courses in Health & Social Care. 

For our extra-curricular opportunities we also offer after school revision and coursework sessions plus a KS3 CAD/CAM club.

Design and Technology students have access to a vast array of industry standard equipment including CAD/CAM.  Students can design using various up to date CAD packages and make using traditional and modern manufacturing technologies, including CNC and automated industry compatible machinery. This gives our students a taste of a modern working environment and thus equipping them with up-to-date skills

 Faculty equipment and processes include design software such as Boutique 3, Solidworks, Boxford CAD/CAM design, PE design, Google Sketchup, Solidworks, 2D Design; CNC manufacturing such as computerised sewing machines, lathes, milling, A1 and A3 size Router, CNC Lathe, CNC Milling machine, Laser Cutters and Rapid Prototyping machine. Traditional equipment such as the sheet metal folder, band saws, lathes for both wood and metal, miller, router, vinyl cutters, sewing machines, food processing, fast chill production, air fryers, industrial fridges, new gas and electric ovens.

We are an 11-18 comprehensive school set in the county town of Northallerton. Since 1973, Northallerton has been served by two comprehensive schools about one mile apart – the Allertonshire School (11-14 middle deemed secondary) and Northallerton College (14-18).  On 2nd April 2015, these two schools merged to become a single 11-18 school, ‘Northallerton School & Sixth Form College’, with approximately 1010 students on roll.
