Job overview

THE ROLE

This is a superb and exciting opportunity for an ambitious, enthusiastic and committed Head of Year to join us at Pimlico Academy from September 2024.

The Head of Year role is a hugely important one, not least in the opportunity it presents to shape the collective identity of a year group. At Pimlico Academy, Heads of Year accompany their year group of around 240 students on their journey through the school. This allows the Head of Year to build strong links with the student body and facilitates the fostering of close links with parents and carers of students who recognise this person as an important point of contact at the academy. Heads of Year are responsible for the overall academic performance and pastoral wellbeing of the students in the year group. Safeguarding of students is the responsibility of all staff, but is a core responsibility of a Head of Year. The appointee will undertake training to enable them to do this effectively and will carry out this aspect of the role with diligence.

They undertake this role in collaboration with the team of tutors they lead, with the Pastoral Support Leader designated to their year group and with all those who are charged with the academic progress and welfare of students.

The successful Head of Year is ambitious for the students in their care, resilient and able to balance competing demands on their time. They will recognise the importance of timely and professional communication with colleagues and parents and carers. They are inspiring role-models, whom students will respect, and who will work collegially within the structures of the academy. At Pimlico Academy, the Heads of Year will be aligned with the vision and values of Future Academies and be committed to supporting the Principal and senior leadership team in the delivery of a truly transformative education for students. They are confident public speakers, intuitive and emotionally intelligent, and committed to the wellbeing of students. Heads of Year are also inspirational, outstanding teachers who teach their subject specialism within one of the academy’s academic departments.

About Pimlico Academy

Pimlico Academy is a mixed ability non-fee paying school for 11-19 year olds. The academy opened in September 2008 and is sponsored by Future Academies. The academy became an all-through school, 3 to 19, from September 2013 when the first Reception class started at our on-site primary school, Pimlico Primary.

The academy has improved rapidly since taking over from the predecessor school and was judged good by Ofsted in December 2021. The percentage of students achieving 5 GCSE 9 -4 grades with Maths and English has improved from 36% to 69%. 90% of students achieved A*-C at A Level in 2016.

The distinguishing factor at Pimlico is our determination to provide pupils with the same standard of education that is on offer at the best independent schools and to ensure all pupils leave the academy as culturally literate young adults. The academy’s sponsor has established The Curriculum Centre to develop and implement a knowledge-based curriculum. We have an excellent Raising Aspirations programme, extensive extra-curricular provision, academic intervention tutors and a wide array of support to enable students to reach their potential.

We employ only very well-qualified staff who are committed to knowledge-rich education and embody a determination to ensure every pupil at Pimlico is hardworking, articulate, literate, ambitious, independent, confident, courteous and compassionate.
