Job overview

Mathematics Teacher

We are looking to recruit an experienced and enthusiastic Maths teacher to join our highly successful and supportive Mathematics department. We follow the International Baccalaureate (IB) throughout the school and experience of the programmes would be an advantage but is not essential. Of greatest importance is a love of the subject combined with the passion and skills for communicating this to our students. We invite applications from outstanding teachers who are committed to consistently delivering lessons that capture the imagination of our pupils across the age range and fostering the enjoyment of mathematics that leads to exceptional achievement.

The Maths department at Southbank International School is a small team consisting of six full-time members of staff and one part time member. There is a strong emphasis on team work and there are numerous opportunities for professional development throughout the year. There are three dedicated Maths teaching rooms each with interactive white boards and plenty of resources.

The school follows the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) through grades 6 to 10 and the IB Diploma Programme through grades 11 and 12. Whilst preferable, no prior knowledge of these curricula is required. However, we do follow an inquiry led approach to learning and emphasis is placed on interdisciplinary links and the development of transferable skills. As we follow the IB Programme all students study Mathematics right up until they graduate from the school at the end of grade 12.

The department places value on employing creativity when planning and delivering lessons. Teachers are encouraged to incorporate lessons that take place outside the constraints of a classroom and to develop sequences of lessons that are delivered in conjunction with other subjects. Class sizes are small with a maximum of 17 in grades 6 and 7 where the students are taught in mixed ability classes, there is however a strong emphasis on differentiation within these lessons. For grades 8 to 10 the class sizes vary up to a maximum of 17 and the students are set according to ability. In the senior part of the school the students choose from Maths Studies, Standard and Higher each with an increasing level of challenge, with the possible addition of Further Maths. The class sizes are again small and are usually taught on a delightful campus overlooking Fitzroy Square.

The school enters numerous Maths competitions each year including the UKMT and the International Schools Maths competitions. We have a rich extra curricula offering and there are always opportunities for staff to extend what is already on offer.
