Job overview

The Harris Federation is a successful, highly collaborative and enterprising group of academies in and around London. Our network of academies is setting standards of excellence through an experienced and supportive approach with the aim that every child in London can have the best possible education, enabling them to fulfil their potential and decide their own future. The focus of the Harris Federation is on transforming some of the most challenging schools in London into exceptional places of learning. That means that when you work at a Harris academy, you are playing a part in something very important – giving children the freedom and the opportunities to choose their own futures.

Our academies are all located in and nearby London and are relatively close to one another.  Eighty five percent of the Harris secondary academies so far inspected by Ofsted have been rated as ‘Outstanding’, and our Progress 8 score across the group is 0.60. Our Core Subject Consultants have played a major part in our success.

We seek an outstanding, qualified Maths teacher who has a highly successful track record of raising achievement in order to drive further improvement across the Harris Federation. This post will involve working with our existing team of Mathematics Consultant Leaders to build upon our success as the Federation grows.

Job outline

The role will be multi-faceted and involve coaching and mentoring, sharing of best practice, developing robust improvement strategies, assisting Harris academies in recruitment and selection, helping to establish new departments or lead rapid recovery where required. The Federation operates twin Teaching Schools as well as a number of highly successful CPD Networks. The post holder would have the opportunity to play a key role in this work.

Who we are looking for:

The role of Maths Consultant is an exciting post providing enormous scope for a talented and creative practitioner to work alongside our established central team of Maths Consultants. There will be many opportunities for future progression either in this role or subsequently in a leadership position within one of our academies. You will be an excellent teacher with a deep passion for your subject. You will possess management experience (ideally but not necessarily at Head of Department level or alternatively be an aspirant Leading Practitioner).

Although based at the Harris Federation offices close to East Croydon Station (with fast access to central London and the M25), the role will mostly be located within the academies.

What we are looking for:

  • QTS (or equivalent) and a relevant undergraduate degree
  • At least three years' teaching experience, and at least two years in a management role
  • The ability to teach Mathematics to A-Level

Why work for the Harris Federation?

As a top performing Multi-Academy Trust, we offer access to a professional and supportive community of academies, fellow Principals and mentors to help develop and progress your career.

Harris is a Federation and not a chain; each Harris academy is different, reflecting the particular aspirations and leadership style of its Principal. The majority of our secondary academies are rated ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted and we are recognised for transforming the life chances of the children and teenagers we educate.

We look for talented individuals who want to be a part of transforming education in London, and helping create exceptional places of learning.

Are you an Aspiring Principal?

At Harris, we have a strong culture of school improvement, and professional development is at the heart of the Federation. We can offer you the opportunity to gain your NPQH, the first-choice qualification for anyone aspiring to become a Headteacher or Principal. The Aspiring Leaders approach prepares you to lead a school confidently and effectively, whilst offering a unique opportunity to learn from some of the best school leaders, all of whom have a wealth of knowledge and are highly experienced in improving outcomes for pupils and students.

If you would like a discussion in confidence about the post, please call Sir Dan Moynihan, Chief Executive, on 020 8253 7777.

Harris academies are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The Harris Federation is a not-for-profit educational charity with almost 25 years of education experience in and around London. Our primary, secondary, all-through and sixth form academies have an international reputation for delivering a step change in education standards.

In joining a Harris Academy, you will be working with some of the country’s most exceptional teachers, support staff and leaders. There are frequent opportunities for internal exchange and promotion; our CPD is regularly described as Outstanding; and we have a package of staff benefits that rivals the most competitive of other professions.

Each Harris Academy is led and run by its senior leaders and has its own curriculum and way of doing things. What our Academies share, however, is a commitment to giving their children and teenagers an excellent education within a happy, caring and supportive environment.

There are Harris Academies in many different settings – inner city and suburban – but they are all within a maximum ninety minute commute from each other. This enables a highly collaborative structure, with on-call support from the Harris Federation.
