Job overview

Commencing September 2023

An inspirational and well qualified teacher of history is required for September 2023. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to teach History to students from Year 7 up to and including A-level. The role is part time (0.3/0.4) for September 2023. However for candidates who can offer a second subject, this could be more. This post would be suitable for either an experienced teacher or a newly qualified teacher seeking to develop their career.

There is an expectation that the successful candidate will also become involved in our departmental activities outside the classroom along with a willingness to offer support to other aspects of the extra-curricular life of the school.

History at Derby High School is a popular subject with over half of students choosing it at GCSE, necessitating a third teacher in the department. All students take history in years 7 to 9. Lessons are innovative and dynamic, embracing not just the past but how we learn about it. Students are encouraged to think independently and use the thinking for learning skills they acquire across all of their subjects.

At GCSE, we follow the AQA 8145 specification: Germany 1890-1945; Conflict and Tension 1919-1939; Britain: Migration, people and empire c790-present; Restoration England 1660-1685.

At A level we follow the OCR syllabus, offering topics that include British Political history 1930-1997. Derby High is one of the few schools nationally to offer a case study of four precolonial African Kingdoms. We also support students to complete an NEA on a subject of their own choosing.•   an inspirational teacher, who believes in high aspirations for all students

•            passionate about innovative learning and teaching

•            a dynamic, forward-thinking individual

•            committed to student success

•            highly organised

•            enthusiastic

In return we can offer you:

•        a positive and innovative learning culture supported by students, staff, parents and governors

•        a collaborative and supportive attitude amongst staff which promotes a sense of teamwork and unity

•        a Senior Leadership Team who is committed to promoting the best environment and outcomes for staff and students

•        an excellent CPD Programme

•        membership of the Teachers’ Pension Scheme

Derby High School is an independent day school and we currently educate 640 students between the ages of 3 to 18, in our purpose-built buildings in the leafy suburb of Littleover in Derby. Our Primary School (a member of IAPS) teaches both boys and girls, whilst our Senior School became co-educational in September 2019 with boys joining Years 7 and 12. In September 2022 we became fully coeducational throughout the school. Derby High School has been awarded the highest possible ‘Excellent’ rating following a full inspection from the Independent Schools Inspectorate in January 2023. The inspection focused on the pupils’ academic and other achievements, as well as their personal development, with the school being found to be excellent in every category.

Our academic record is particularly strong, with 78% of our 2022 A level entries being graded A*-B, and 78% of GCSE grades being awarded 7-9; this places Derby High significantly ahead of all local schools in both A level and GCSEs.

The school has rigorous child protection procedures in place and the person appointed will be asked to supply information confirming identity and qualifications and will be subject to an enhanced DBS/Section 128 checks.

The closing date for applications is 12 noon on Wednesday 12th April 2023.

Interviews: Week commencing 17th April
