Job overview

An oversubscribed and exceptional school with an outstanding reputation is looking for a dedicated double reed specialist to join its team of peripatetic teachers. The primary responsibility for the successful candidate will be to prepare, plan and deliver high quality one-to-one lessons to students learning bassoon/oboe and other woodwind instruments. They will be passionate about developing the double reed programme within the College and encourage students to undertake lessons. They will assess and provide feedback to students and parents on an ongoing basis, including annual written reports, and will encourage participation in extra-curricular music provision on offer at Hockerill.

The Hockerill Music Department fosters a vibrant musical community with a substantial percentage of students actively participating in music lessons. Complementing the formal academic curriculum are 24 weekly extra-curricular clubs, offering students a diverse range of opportunities. The department run a series of events each term which provides a performance platform in varying contexts. There are solo recitals, chamber music events, jazz evenings and larger scale productions in collaboration with other departments across the college, and at external venues alongside many other musical events. The department is committed to providing accessibility for musicians at all skill levels, from beginner through to post grade 8 standard.

We anticipate there being at least on hour of oboe teaching available for the successful candidate, and we would be able to supplement that with other woodwind students. We would expect this to increase this throughout the academic year and beyond following efforts to recruit more double reed students.

Candidates who are invited for interview should also be prepared to teach a short taster lesson, demonstrating their teaching skills and rapport with students.

Hockerill Anglo-European College has been consistently ranked in the top tier of UK comprehensive league tables based on its IB Diploma and GCSE results. Included in the Sunday Times 2024 Good Schools Guide of top UK schools, it is the most oversubscribed school in Hertfordshire.

The College is situated in Bishop’s Stortford within the beautiful landscaped grounds of a former teacher training college and is within 30 minutes of both London and Cambridge, with Stansted Airport just 10 minutes away. Ofsted

"Students' personal development is outstanding. All students, including boarders, enjoy school and this is reflected in their exemplary behaviour, their mature and willing shouldering of responsibilities and in the harmonious relationships between students and between staff and students. The recent enhancement of the specialist music provision together with the resulting wider range of available activities has added significantly to students' enthusiasm for school. A real strength of the school is the way students are involved in decision-making through many opportunities such as the school council".
