Job overview

Term Time only 36 weeks - 16 hours per week.

Delivery of equipment and materials, for use in practical lessons, to the appropriate laboratories, in accordance with the science curriculum; setting up and clearing away practical equipment, trialing assessed practical and class practical work, preparing standard solutions, stock control, ordering and maintaining safe working practices.

1. Chemistry Lessons

a) Prepare apparatus and resources for teaching/class use and to set up demonstrations, including data logging experiments. Following instructions and appropriate Health and Safety guidelines. Provide appropriate CLEAPSS cards and/or COSHH assessments as necessary.

b) Be in attendance and provide support, with occasional demonstrating during practical lessons when needed.

c) Clear up after lessons, dispose of waste appropriately, reset trolleys or return equipment and chemicals to their appropriate stores when needed

d) Suggest ways of improving the use of Chemistry department resources to help increase effectiveness of teaching, including manufacturing new apparatus or modifying existing equipment.

e) Construct and trial equipment for use in GCSE, and A Level Chemistry practical assessment. Ensure that the experiments work, resolve any problems well before the exams/lesson and provide a set of results if required.

f) Organise, set up for, and support Open Days, Science Week events and Primary School visit days, as needed

g) Prepare standard solutions from concentrate, using recipes and Health and Safety guidelines, as appropriate

h) Provide support to the other science departments when needed, for example during periods of staff absence within the Science Technician Team or when particular departments have a high level of practical requirements in a short period of time

2. Safety and Maintenance

a) Liaise with the 0.6 Chemistry Technician and Head of Chemistry and other Chemistry Department teaching staff to ensure the safety of all apparatus.

b) Be aware of current safety regulations and recommendations by reading appropriate CLEAPSS and COSHH literature and attending training courses, implementing new guidance, in conjunction with the Head of Chemistry and the 0.6 Chemistry Technician.

c) Maintain a safe working environment and notifying the Head of Chemistry or 0.6 Chemistry technician immediately of any problems.

d) Carry out risk assessments in conjunction with the Head of Chemistry and the 0.6 Chemistry technician with reference to CLEAPSS/ASE/COSHH guidelines.

e) Be able to give basic first aid.

f) Carry out regular maintenance and safety checks on pieces of apparatus as required.

g) Carry out repairs on equipment as necessary or organise specialist repairs if required.

g) Liaise with Estates and Housekeeping regarding laboratory maintenance and safety.

h) Review the status of the stock and re-ordering as necessary.

i) Ensure all chemicals and are stored safely and in accordance with local rules. Ensure disposal of chemicals and resources in accordance to appropriate guidelines.

j) Maintain accurate chemical stock records and up to date safety information.

3. Administration

a) Maintain and update safety information.

b) Source, cost and order equipment and other resources when required, in liaison with the 0.6 Chemistry Technician and Head of Chemistry.

c) Keep a record of all invoices and budget expenditure. Check and reconcile against monthly budget printouts from the Finance Department

d) Maintain accurate stock records of apparatus and resources.

e) Compile and maintain distribution records of departmental text books.

f) Use appropriate ICT skills.

g) Carry out additional departmental tasks as deemed necessary by the Head of Chemistry.

h) Attend Departmental meetings as required with the Head of Chemistry to plan for the development of the department.

i) Support teaching staff; provide advice and make recommendations.

j) Maintaining department display boards alongside the 0.6 Chemistry Technician, Head of Chemistry and other Chemistry Department teaching staff as well as with the Head of STEAM and ensuring they are eye-catching and contain relevant and topical information.
