TLR 2a £3,214 per annum

Part of the wider New Bridge Multi Academy Trust (MAT), New Bridge School is a generic special needs school for students and students between the ages of 11 and 19 across three sites within Oldham. 

The Learning Centre has an Outstanding rated provision which caters for approximately 150 students with a wide range of SEND, from moderate learning difficulties to profound and multiple learning difficulties, including severe and complex learning difficulties. The school is popular with families both in Oldham and the surrounding boroughs and our numbers are increasing year on year. We are excited about being able to expand our teaching roles and create new vacancies to meet the needs of our new students. The Learning Centre also caters for a wide range of students including those with physical disabilities, multisensory impairments, visual impairments, hearing impairments and autism spectrum conditions. All students have an EHC plan. To cater to the needs of the range of students the Learning Centre has developed a range of different provisions, including our Key Stage 5 Community Living, Entitlement Base and Interactive Base.

The Trustees are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and motivated practitioner to join our dynamic, growing and committed staff team in the following area:

Outdoor Education and Duke of Edinburgh Deliverer

We are looking for someone to develop and deliver our Outdoor Education Curriculum to the full range of students across the Learning Centre. The aim of this Curriculum will be to provide opportunities for these students to access and engage with opportunities to allow students to practice individualised small step EHCP targets around the four areas of SEND: Cognition and Learning, Communication, Sensory and Physical, Social Emotional and Mental Health. It is critical that these students can practice skills they have been taught in the classroom in a new environment that meets their needs so they can transfer skills into other areas of their learning for life.  

The Learning Centre currently links Outdoor Education to the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme which is open to all of our learners irrespective of their Pathway which we are keen to continue. We are looking for a teacher who can support us in achieving our overarching aim for Outdoor Education: 

  • Developing students’ social, emotional and interpersonal skills. 
  • Developing awareness of risk awareness and management. 
  • Engaging with their peers to develop attributes associated with teamwork. 
  • Gaining Duke of Edinburgh Awards where appropriate. 
  • Lead and support students in Duke of Edinburgh expeditions for Bronze, Silver and Gold.
  • Increasing their understanding of the environment whilst being responsible in their actions when visiting the outdoors. 

Curriculum Lead

We are seeking an inspirational leader of Outdoor Education with the drive, energy and ambition to create a department and culture which promotes skills development, independence and life skills through the subject in an inclusive way for all our students regardless of their ability level. They should be able to demonstrate a commitment to:  

  • giving opportunities to all learners through a wide and varied curriculum which allows them to develop their knowledge and learning in Outdoor Education.  
  • developing relationships with community providers to ensure an offer which is varied, rich and meaningful for all students  
  • developing a strong subject department team supporting less experienced members to become excellent practitioners promoting good leadership qualities and leading by example. 
  • working in collaboration with experienced practitioners to understand the needs of these complex learners and how best to meet their learning goals through Outdoor education  

The successful candidate will:

  • Be an excellent practitioner with the commitment and motivation to inspire students’ learning and development
  • Have experience of Duke of Edinburgh and leading expeditions. 
  • Have the Lowland Leader/ Highland Leader Award or be willing to work towards. 
  • Have relevant, up to date training: MIDAS (or equivalent); Educational Visit Leader; First Aid;  
  • Have experience of teaching young people with Autism or Special Educational Needs within the primary or secondary sector or have a specific interest in developing their teaching skills in a special school setting.
  • Have high expectations of young people, and a commitment to raising standards of attainment to ensure that they can achieve their full educational potential
  • Have experience of enhancement of pupil progress gains and raising attainment and achievement levels of all students
  • Be able to demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement and innovation through imaginative and differentiated lessons which meet individual needs
  • Have experience of current assessment practice and the use of data and pupil progress tracking to ensure that all groups of learners achieve
  • Possess the emotional and physical resilience necessary when working with young people with a range of complex needs
  • Be able to build positive relationships with the class group, ensuring consistency and continuity on a daily basis.
  • Have the ability to foster good relationships with other staff, pupils, parents and the wider community
  • Be hard working, organised and proactive in their professional development
  • Be a team player who can work effectively with all members of the New Bridge team

The post will be based initially at New Bridge Learning Centre, St Martins Road, Fitton Hill, however, all staff are employed by the MAT and are expected to work at any site within the New Bridge Group.
