Job overview

The post represents an exciting opportunity for a teacher with the necessary vision and ambition to help the School offer a first rate academic education for boys. As a teacher at Wetherby you will have the opportunity to build your experience of working with a team of specialists and to develop the teaching of Biology in interesting and innovative ways, with the support of the Head of Biology. The post would suit a talented newly qualified teacher or one with a couple of years’ experience looking to develop their careers but applications are, of course, welcome from more experienced colleagues who would like the freedom and challenge of working in a newly-established school. Teaching staff at Wetherby Senior School have experience of teaching in both the maintained and independent sectors and colleagues looking to move into independent education are warmly encouraged to apply.

The Science and Biology Department

The science department consists of nine teachers, three from each discipline, working alongside two excellent laboratory technicians. Over the past three years, an average of 65% of students have studied for individual science IGCSEs, while the remaining 35% have studied for the Science (Double Award). In that time the Biology Department has achieved 100% 9-7. Biology is a popular choice at A level.

The department’s aim is not limited to aiding students in achieving exceptional results, but also to help them develop a scientific approach to problem solving through practical work, an exploratory curriculum and maximising the cocurricular opportunities that the school’s central London location offers. There are nine fully equipped teaching laboratories with resources stretching beyond A level specifications and the expertise and experience to bring practical work into any teaching scenario. Extra-curricular activities are a strong focus for the school with the department running an Astronomy club, Future Medics club and academic Olympiad in all three sciences. Wetherby Senior regularly runs trips to local museums, such as the Natural History Museum and the Science Museum, as well as offering science based expeditions to the ZSL London Zoo, Kew Gardens and the Royal Observatory at Greenwich. New members to the team are encouraged to think of their own trips they would like to run, which includes the opportunity for longer trips abroad.
