Job overview

1-year Temporary Part –Time

(Teaching hours TBC but likely to be in the 30-50% FTE range)

 starting September 2024

 Located in the beautiful town of Tervuren, near the university city of Leuven, BSB is a not for profit, inclusive, fee-paying international school with 1,350 students from approximately 70 countries. There is an Early Childhood Centre for children aged 1-3. Our Primary School offers a bespoke curriculum with integrated learning themes that are inquiry based and skills driven. Whilst British-based, it is uniquely adapted to the needs of our international and multicultural student body. Students in Year 10 & 11 study for IGCSE and BTEC courses. Post-16 students can choose from three internationally recognised pre-university examination courses: English A Levels, International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma or BTEC. In years 7-9 some students are taught in a bilingual class with some of their subjects taught in French. BSB has outstanding facilities and is the only international school in Belgium to have its own 25m indoor swimming pool. With an excellent record of academic achievement, BSB students go on to attend a wide range of top universities across the globe.

We are seeking applications from suitably qualified and experienced Design Technology teachers who can bring a real enthusiasm to the school. The teacher of Design and Technology will join a thriving and popular department and will be expected to teach K.S 3 students between the ages of 11-14. A strong curriculum base for Resistant Material Technology and Product Design already exists and we seek a person to complement these areas of designing and making.

Experience of international education at Secondary level would be welcomed.

The Design Technology Department

The design process and practical skills are highly valued at BSB, and that is why we have invested enormously in state-of-the-art Design and Technology workshops which are second to none. 3D printing, laser and vinyl cutters, a CNC Router, a lathe and milling machine and a dedicated computer suite make up the advanced computer-aided engineering facilities. The three purpose-built multi-media workshops are supported by a heat treatment area for brazing / welding / forging and casting facilities, whilst lathes for both wood and metal and a spray room support the ambitious student projects. The light and spacious rooms are a pleasure to teach in and encourage fresh and exciting ideas.

Design and Technology in the classroom

A strong curriculum base for Resistant Material Technology (woods/metals/plastics) and Product Design already exists and we seek a person who is practical and able to teach a range of existing design and make projects with the existing team of teachers.

At KS3, focused design and practical tasks are used to develop the students’ understanding of a design process, which leads to an individual design challenge where the student takes the lead. Students can design and develop their ideas using wood, metal, plastics and compliant materials. Class sizes are up to 16 students per class.

The successful candidate would be supported with schemes of work, training to help deliver the individual projects and technician support.

The successful candidate would be required to run a lunchtime club once a week.

Profile:

The successful candidate will ideally have previous experience teaching in the British system – either in the UK or internationally – across the Secondary School age range (11-14).

They should:

  • have successful experience of teaching DT in a workshop based environment;
  • be attuned to current developments in the teaching of Design Technology.
  • set the highest standards in terms of learning and teaching, getting the very best from students from all backgrounds and of all abilities;
  • work closely with colleagues in creating a sense of cohesion and spirit within the department.
  • be appreciative of students’ differing cultural backgrounds;
  • be actively involved in continuing professional development within the department and Art, Design and Technology Faculty, and across departments where necessary, including curriculum planning, after-school meetings, lesson observations, relevant courses and CPD days;
  • be willing and able to contribute wholeheartedly to the personal and social development of students.

The Person:

  • Commitment to the BSB Guiding Statements
  • Committed to always achieving the best for BSB students
  • Belief that in learning and in life more is achieved together than alone
  • Committed to the safety and wellbeing of BSB students

In return, we offer:

  • A one year, part-time position (12,5 hours/week)
  • A great professional experience in a vibrant British international environment
  • Excellent professional development opportunities
  • An attractive salary – BSB Learning & Teaching staff – Band 4 representing a minimum of € 58.669 and a maximum of € 106.485 gross per year for a full time position (depending on the years of relevant experience) and extra-legal benefits including an hospitalisation insurance, extra pension payments, luncheon vouchers and free use of the BSB sport facilities and gym.

Application process:

The deadline for applications is Wednesday 24 April 2024 at 09:00 (CET).

Please note that only applications sent in using the application form on the BSB website will be considered. No other submissions will be accepted.

Short listed candidates will be invited to interview at the school soon after and this process will include a sample lesson and opportunities to meet potential colleagues.

We look forward to receiving your application. If you have not heard anything further from us by Friday 10 May, please assume you have been unsuccessful on this occasion.
