Job overview

We are seeking to appoint a well-qualified Teacher in charge of Mandarin to take up post after October half term 2024. This is a part-time, maternity cover position, and involves teaching across the age and ability range from Year 6 to Year 12, in the region of 18 out of a possible 30 periods per week (0.6 FTE timetable). The post holder will be expected to contribute to the development and direction of the Mandarin curriculum within the School. In addition, the teacher in charge of Mandarin will be expected to offer extra-curricular activities for pupils in Year 6 to Year 11, outside the formal curriculum, during lunchtimes and after school. A degree of flexibility around the working day is therefore required.

The post holder will deliver a beginners’ course to our Year 6 students for two periods a week. They will also teach a beginners’ course to those opting for Mandarin in Year 8 on three periods a week, which continues into Year 9. Healthy numbers opt to continue the subject at GCSE, for which we teach the AQA GCSE Chinese (Spoken Mandarin) course in Years 10 and 11 across four periods a week. We also offer a non-examined Mandarin course to Lower Sixth Students as part of our St Katharine’s Study programme which is delivered across four periods a week.

In addition to teaching duties the teacher i/c Mandarin is required to deliver lunchtime conversation lessons to Year 11 students in preparation for summer GCSE oral examinations.

All teaching staff are expected to contribute to the pastoral and enrichment programmes of the School. In addition to teaching, the post holder will also have pastoral responsibilities within their allocated year group. All staff share the responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of the students, in accordance with the School’s safeguarding policies.

Founded on Christian values, we enable every girl to discover and develop her own strengths. St Helen & St Katharine is a school where success is celebrated but not revered and our goal is to ensure that every girl achieves success as she defines it, so that she can believe in herself, her talents and her abilities.

We are one of the leading girls’ schools in the country and are justifiably proud of a tradition of high aspiration and academic achievement (our students achieved record breaking GCSE results with 77% A* this year). But we take just as much pleasure in the warmth of the atmosphere here and in our dynamic range of extra-curricular activities. From Minecraft to Mandarin, Silversmithing to Sailing, Board Games to Big Band and much more besides, our girls are given the space and opportunity to make their own choices and find their niche.

A welcoming 22 acre campus in Abingdon provides exceptional facilities that include a brand new state-of-the-art Sports Centre; Performing Arts Centre; extended Sixth Form Centre; Science Centre with 12 new laboratories, break out spaces and a 200sqm science themed glass atrium and a 3D Design Centre.

This is a friendly and happy place in which lasting relationships are built on kindness and respect. Our ambitions for our students are based upon them developing confidence and resilience and an open-minded and creative approach to learning and to life.
