Job overview

Godstowe is a thriving, busy school enjoying a famous reputation in its field. Approximately a third of our pupils are boarders. The School prepares children for entry, mostly at 13+ but some at 11+, into the leading independent senior schools. The School prides itself in academic excellence, whilst being non-selective at entry. For over 120 years, Godstowe girls have achieved outstanding results. Many have competed successfully for scholarships and awards at prestigious Senior Schools and have represented the School at local and national Maths competitions. At the same time the School provides excellent pastoral care, to ensure that pupils flourish in line with our ethos of encouraging them to be confident, happy and successful.

We are seeking to appoint an experienced, enthusiastic and caring Maths specialist teacher for maternity cover from September 2024. Working in a department of both specialist teachers and teachers of general subjects delivering Maths the successful candidate will teach across Years 3-8 with a particular focus on Years 6, 7 & 8 where experience of 13+ Common Entrance and Scholarship level is required.

This is a full-time role. Among other benefits are a competitive salary, pension, discount on school fees for eligible children and meals in term time.

Godstowe is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Applicants will be required to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Something Special is happening at Godstowe

Godstowe was founded by two strong, progressive women, originally in fact as a school whose purpose would be to prepare girls for the move down the hill to Wycombe Abbey School. Their vision was for an innovative, academic and broad education for girls and, without a doubt, this continues to live on in today’s school.

Our ethos is simple. All we want is for our girls and boys to be Confident, Happy and Successful. Indeed, if the first two are true, the third will almost certainly follow. Success is defined in many ways, and we mean successful in the broadest sense: successfully kind, successfully courteous as well as successful in achieving a wide range of goals. We keep our pupils busy and engaged, we entertain and intrigue them, encourage them, and excite them. Happy children are easy to teach.

With outstanding, highly qualified teaching staff as well as a strong and experienced pastoral team, excellent facilities, wonderful surroundings, a non-selective intake policy and a more positive, exuberant and industrious atmosphere than you will find in other schools, it is likely that most of our children will be happy to learn, happy to stretch themselves, happy to support each other, and happy to do whatever they can to take an active part in their own education. Why push children through the curriculum when they can be inspired to make their own journey, choose their own routes and arrive at their destination under their own steam?

Our pupils love their time at school. It never ceases to amaze me just how much highly motivated and enthusiastic people can willingly contribute, and we don’t just mean the girls and boys, we mean the staff and the parents too! Godstowe is alive with opportunity. Remember, to learn a lesson you need to live it.
