Belmont School is an independent day, flexi and weekly boarding school for boys and girls aged 3 to 16.  Situated close to the town of Dorking in the Surrey Hills, Belmont enjoys a 65-acre rural site enabling pupils to enjoy a vibrant, creative, and wholesome school environment.  

The School comprises the Early Years (Pre-Reception and Reception), Prep School (Years 1 to 6) and Senior School (Year 7 upwards).  Classes rarely exceed 16 pupils in the Prep School and 20 in the Senior School.  

The school day runs from 8.00am to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday with weekly or flexible boarding available from Sunday evening to Friday evening.  All staff are required to undertake supervisory duties and to run one extra-curricular activity after school every week.  The successful applicant must be prepared to enter fully into the life of this busy and vibrant school.

We are seeking a full-time teacher of Science from September 2022 who has a demonstrable passion for the subject and the necessary skills and abilities to complement the current staffing arrangements.  The post would suit a fully qualified teacher of Science with experience of teaching to GCSE level.  This post might also suit a newly qualified, or relatively inexperienced teacher, and appropriate support will be provided.

The successful candidate will be accountable to the Head of Science and will have responsibility for promoting and supporting the School’s aims and policies.  More specifically, the successful candidate will be expected to undertake the following:

• Establishing a structured learning environment conducive to learning and where pupils know that high standards are always required. Motivating pupils to learn and establishing a rapport with pupils conducive to learning. 

• Recognising the specific needs of each pupil and each class, including extending the more able pupils, supporting pupils for whom Science is more challenging and ensuring that no pupil falls below the radar of teacher monitoring. 

• Planning and preparing challenging and interesting lessons in accordance with departmental schemes of work. Setting an appropriate pace for lessons and adapting teaching methods to the needs of pupils.

• Managing the classroom effectively with appropriate use of sanctions and rewards in accordance with departmental and School policies. 

• Demonstrating a range of teaching methods and keeping abreast of developments in the subject area at, KS3 and GCSE level and possibly at KS2; employing a range of teaching resources including the display of pupils’ work. 

• Carrying out assessment according to both departmental and School policies. Recording assessment grades/reports etc.) within deadlines set and keeping clear records. 

• Setting and marking of class work and homework according to relevant School and departmental policies and using the virtual learning environment according to school policy. 

• Reporting to parents on progress at Parents’ Evenings or in response to reasonable requests.

• Setting and marking/moderating examination coursework where appropriate. 

• Attending departmental meetings and sharing departmental responsibility; Attending staff meetings and School or departmental INSET; seeking opportunities for professional development; participation in the School’s appraisal scheme; participation in induction arrangements. 

• Undertake other general duties commensurate with the role of a teacher in school e.g., supervisory duties and responding to requests from the Senior Management Team.

• All teachers are responsible for ensuring high standards of learning and achievement for all pupils they teach and are expected to play a full part in the life of the school. They share collective responsibility for the daily running of the school, including the work of a form teacher (if required), and other supervisory duties.
