Job overview

We seek to appoint a committed and hardworking teacher who is a specialist in Sociology and keen to teach at Post 16 level. We seek to appoint one full time member of staff and an additional part time member of staff to teach A-level Sociology.

A-level Sociology is a popular course choice in the College, with over 230 students studying the course across both year groups. The department follows AQA specification and currently teach the units of education with theory & methods, families & household, beliefs in society & crime &deviance.

The Sociology department supports the College’s foundation programme. This a one year course that prepares and develops students so that they can access a level 3 study programme the year after. GCSE Many students who were previously not eligible for level 3 make rapid progress, which gives these students a wider range of opportunities in their progression, including going on to study A-level Sociology.

Both experienced teachers and NQTs are encouraged to apply. Whatever your experience you will be supported in a way that best supports your development in a College renowned for its innovation as well as the exceptional progress of its students.

You will be joining a strong team of teachers. There are 4 full time teachers in the department and there is a strong collaborative and supportive culture amongst the team. The department in recent years has also developed greater links with speakers and also send students on an annual Prison trip for the Crime and Deviance topic.

Birkenhead Sixth Form College is an award-winning specialist in 16-18 education based in Wirral, Merseyside.

The only dedicated provider of A Level and BTEC education in the area, record-breaking results in 2023 cemented the College’s place as a national leader in the sector and the most successful sixth form in the region.

The College takes students from over 60 different high schools each year, including those from the wealth of local grammar schools, and that cohort of students perform considerably better at the College than their grammar alternative.

Students’ success at Birkenhead Sixth Form College is underpinned by the College’s belief in social mobility and the core values of Positivity, Ambition, Resilience and Thoughtfulness, ensuring that every individual student is given the chance to fulfil their potential.

The College looks for the same core values in its staff, who are committed to excellence and valued as individuals in the same way as the students. Rather than being concerned solely on outcomes, the College focuses on purposeful hard work and the culmination of meaningful interactions on a day-to-day basis ensures that results look after themselves.

Unique and ambitious extra-curricular programmes devised by staff put the College at the forefront of educational innovation and help students to complete their A Levels as successful and exceptionally well-rounded young people.
