Job overview

At The Chalfonts Community College, we believe that for children to make good academic progress, they need to be safe, happy, and feel that they belong to a community that values and cares for them. Our Year Leaders are therefore some of the most important people in our school. They are responsible for leading our tutors and pastoral support staff in ensuring that all of our children are known as individuals, and have the right support in place to flourish. They are responsible for identifying any trends in their year group, such as attendance or uniform standards slipping, or a new unsafe or unkind behaviour becoming popular, and they work to develop and implement plans to address these. Our Year Leaders take a lead on investigating and managing any serious behaviour incidents in their year group, ensuring that children are sanctioned fairly, and that plans are in place to prevent anything similar happening again. They work closely with the SENDCo and our Safeguarding Team to ensure that we identify any difficulties early, and that our most vulnerable children have access to the best and highest levels of support.

What we are looking for

Ideally, we want to find an experienced pastoral leader, who can demonstrate success in a similar role, and who understands the challenging national picture we are facing in education. However, even more important, is finding the right person with the right values and ethos – someone who shares our school values, who cares about children, and who enjoys spending time with them. Someone who is able to work positively with young people who may have difficult lives, and who may find school difficult, and who is able to provide them with the caring boundaries and effective support that they need in order to reach the high expectations we have of them.

Our College

The Chalfonts Community College converted to Academy status in 2011 and is a larger than average community academy with a roll of 1400 students. Our last Ofsted Inspection was carried out in November 2022 when the College was judged as ‘good’ overall. 'There is a sense of pride, both in Chalfonts Community College and in the outcomes pupils achieve, that is shared between staff, governors and pupils.'

Curriculum

Our curriculum is designed to:

• Be rich and relevant and meet the needs, interests and aspirations of all students

• Focus on raising the achievement for all students

• Support students with the educational and career choices that they make at different ages

• Develop the skills and attitudes required for students to succeed after leaving school and to become responsible and confident members of society.

With an A Level A*-B pass rate of 39% and an A*-E pass rate of 96%, plus a long-standing reputation for excellence in vocational courses, student destinations in the last two years have included a wide range of universities and further education establishments.

Extra Curricular Activities

At Chalfonts Community College we aim to ensure that the whole child is catered for with extra-curricular opportunities including theatre visits, music performances, sports clubs and teams and a wide range of other events. Our Performing Arts productions are renowned for their outstanding quality and our sports teams compete at local, regional and national levels. We recognise the importance of activities beyond the classroom in developing the experience, skills and personal attributes of our students, enabling them to be better prepared for applications to and success in, university and the world of work.

Pastoral Care

We understand the importance of keeping students safe, happy, and secure. Each of our students is assigned a personal tutor who remains with them through Years 7 to 11. In the Sixth Form personal tutors assist with university and work applications. We also provide support from Learning Mentors, our Inclusion Manager and our excellent Learning Support Department.

Staffing

We operate a coaching culture to share best practice, maintain high standards of teaching and to support all staff in their career development. In our school, we have 90 (FTE) teaching staff and 80 (FTE) members of support staff.
