About The British School of Amsterdam

The British School of Amsterdam is a large international school located in Amsterdam, and we provide world class teaching and learning in the British Schools curriculum, for children from 3 to 18 years old. We currently have over 1,100 pupils enrolled at the school, in three school sections: Early Years (3-6 years), Juniors (6-11 years) and Seniors (11-18 years). We offer a warm, vibrant, and modern learning environment for our pupils, and we are a collegial and friendly place to work for teaching professionals.

The role of Nursery Officer

Supporting the Nursery Class Teacher with all aspects of pupil teaching and learning (children aged 3-4 years), your role involves helping the Teacher with the day to day running of the classroom. This is a busy, hands-on, classroom based role. You may also be required to provide support with any relevant administrative tasks and other related duties in the Early Years School.

You will not be expected to assume the duties of a Class Teacher, or take responsibility for the quality of the teaching and learning. This is a support role working with younger children in a classroom setting. Responsibility for the day to day management of the class, the planning, assessment and the quality of the teaching and learning of the lesson remains with the Class Teacher.

Important: Applicants must have a NL or EU passport and/or valid NL work visa. We are not able to sponsor non-EU citizens for this role.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide support and assistance to Class Teachers in the day to day operating environment of the classroom
  • In partnership with the Class Teacher, help support teaching and learning in the classroom, including working with individual children or groups
  • Complete tasks that could be reasonably expected of the position in the support of pupils and the classroom environment, as requested by the Class Teacher
  • Perform any reasonable duties prescribed by the leadership team
  • Be a team player who puts the needs of the children, the team and the school first
  • Adhere to the school’s policies and procedures
  • Comply with Health & Safety regulations
  • Comply with the school’s requirements for storage and security of pupil records
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Take part in the wider life of the school e.g. attending school assemblies
  • Supervising playtime or lunchtime duties (when required to do so)
  • Attend meetings and the yearly training ahead of each new school year
  • Keep up-to-date with school information e.g. bulletins, minutes of meetings
  • Help to maintain and organise resources in the school relevant to the child/children you work with
  • Keep the school team up-to-date with a focus on the child’s needs
  • Support and uphold the mission, vision and values of the School

In line with UK regulations, the child ratio in the Nursery School is 1:8. If a member of the nursery staff is absent, Nursery Officers in Early Years may be required to cover to ensure the ratio is maintained. During times of cover, the ratio may not be exceeded and there will always be a Class Teacher present.

Person Specification:

  • Minimum 2 years' relevant experience working with Early Years age children (3-6 years)
  • Minimum 2 years' working in British School or International school systems
  • Early Childcare qualifications are essential
  • NNEB and/or Cache Level 3 qualifications are required
