The Teacher of Chemistry plays a crucial role supporting pupils in learning key scientific knowledge and skills, and instilling in students a curiosity and enthusiasm for learning Science and Chemistry. Chemistry is one of the most popular subject choices at Forest, and the Teacher of Chemistry will play a key role in maintaining and developing this high uptake.
The successful applicant will have outstanding subject knowledge and a range of highly effective strategies to enable pupils to make excellent progress. The Teacher of Chemistry will use both formative and summative assessment techniques to effectively assess student understanding, diagnose misconceptions and provide targeted feedback.
Chemistry occupies a special place in the academic life of Forest School. It is a large and tremendously successful department, with exceptionally high student uptake at GCSE and A-level. A number of Forest pupils go on to read Chemistry, Natural Sciences and cognate disciplines at a range of leading universities.

Forest invests heavily in the development of pedagogy and teaching strategy, with all teachers expected to engage in an ambitious Professional Learning Programme which includes seminars and contact with leading minds in the teaching and learning space; most recently, Forest welcomed Tom Sherrington who presented on curriculum strategy and design. In addition, we are immensely proud of our culture of formative, ongoing and developmental peer observation through our Teaching and Learning Communities. A balanced science programme, incorporating most of the features of the National Curriculum, is taught to pupils in Year 7 to 9 and satisfies the programme of study for Key Stage 3.
In Year 7 and 8, each class has one science teacher. In Year 9 pupils are taught by three specialist teachers and follows a programme of study in preparation for their Science GCSEs.
In Year 10, they choose either Double Award Science or any two or all three, of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, following the Edexcel IGCSE course.
The person appointed will join an exciting and successful Department and will make a full range of contributions to the life of the School. The Co-Curriculum is a crucial part of the life and learning at Forest. While expecting our pupils to demonstrate a strong work ethic in their timetabled lessons, we also recognise how important it is for both staff and pupils to develop learning outside of the classroom. We ask our pupils to try new things, explore new places, learn new skills and experience real challenge.
