 About the role

Richmond Park School is seeking a dedicated and nurturing 1:1 Teaching Assistant (Native English Speaker preferable) to support a Year 1 pupil with specific learning needs. This is a unique opportunity for a patient, proactive, and emotionally intelligent individual to make a meaningful impact on a child’s academic and personal development within a warm and collaborative school community.

This position is particularly suited to someone with experience in Early Years or KS1, and/or a background in SEN or inclusive education.

 Working hours
• Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (core hours)
• Occasional additional paid hours available for afternoon cover and after-school activities

Key responsibilities
• Provide consistent 1:1 in-class support for a Year 1 child with identified special needs
• Help the child access learning by adapting tasks and using visual aids or simplified instructions
• Supervise and guide the child during whole-class lessons, transitions, and independent work time
• Lead short, purposeful 1:1 sessions during specialist lessons, focusing on:
o Catch-up on literacy or numeracy
o Reinforcement of classroom content
o Emotional regulation or social stories
• Communicate daily with the class teacher to ensure consistent support
• Observe and record relevant progress, behaviours, and triggers
• Foster the child’s independence, confidence, and sense of inclusion

Person specification
Essential:
• Experience working with children aged 4–7 (Early Years or KS1)
• Excellent spoken and written English (native or near-native level)
• Patient, calm, and encouraging manner
• Ability to take initiative and adapt learning tasks in real time
• Commitment to inclusive education and child wellbeing

Desirable:
• Experience working with children with SEN (e.g., ADHD, ASD, speech delay)
• Familiarity with visual support tools and regulation techniques
• Teaching Assistant qualification or equivalent
